I had similar problems with the original engine some years ago (large indy, freeze when running into a soldier).
I *think* for me it was caused by corrupt data files and that I fixed it by re-installing from the original floppies.

There's a finished CDI image available somewhere (look in this forum for a link). Simply burn this to a CD using DiscJuggler (important! other programs might not work) and boot up your DC with it. After it has loaded, swap the CD for one with a supported game on it. That's all. I don't know if it's ...

What are the requirements to start learning reverse engineering? Should we have an high education in computer sciences? Even though a bit of theoretical background helps, it's not really neccessary. You should know a bit about binary/hex number representations, and you should know how to use a hex ...

I also enjoyed the Spellcasting games and Gateway. It would be great if someone found out a bit more about them.

A good place to post any findings (esp. file formats or other engine information) would be the REWiki ;)

Cool, another one to add to my list. :)

That is true, I can verify this at least for Might and Magic. However it is still possible to re-implement such games, it's just more work. You have to separate the hard-coded data into external files, like the kyra, lure and BASS modules do in ScummVM (or like the GemRB project handles it by adding...

I'd really like something like ScummVM but for RPGs with support for games like Eye of the Beholder, Lands of Lore, TES: Arena and Daggerfall... *dreams* :) Don't forget the early Might and Magic series (before Might and Magic 6). shameless advertising: If you want to help on reverse engineering so...

P.S.: I liked ST: Judgement Rites a lot, never played 25th anniversary, though. I once wrote a decoder for their "bundle" file format, and some of the subfiles contained therein have been analyzed, too. But the hardest part, i.e. decoding whatever script format they may have used, is left...

For the more demanding games, x86 computers can use dynamic core, which partially virtualizes the DOSBox processor. Non x86 machines cannot take advantage of the dynamic core. For less demanding games, normal core is fine. Normal core is 100% emulated and should not have a performance penalty on no...

Documenting other (open source) games or file formats is fine, too. As long as it doesn't lead to excessive duplication of work already done elsewhere (the scummvm- and xentar-wikis come to mind), feel free to add it to the wiki. It would also be nice to have some simple "howtos" from othe...

Okay, here's the Wiki: http://rewiki.regengedanken.de/ Not yet much on it, I just started editing some stuff. Feel free to register (optional) and dump your stuff in there. SQL is backed up regularily, although any (image-)uploads are not (at least not yet). If anyone has an idea for a nice logo, it...

I'm currently working on it. I've got the web server but it still needs some configuration so that the wiki will run smooth (php/apache settings).

Maybe I'll have something to show by this weekend, we'll see :)

I don't know if wikia would support a Wiki that's based on reverse-engineering. I will check with a friend of mine who has a dedicated server, maybe he can spare some bandwidth.
