Gabriel Knight 1 - combine DOS and Windows versions?

Post by Tim20 »

Hi

I'm not sure if anything is going to become of this thread, or if it's possible to do this with the original DOS and Windows versions. This is something I'm looking into with my retro Win98 PC. I've noticed different versions of games can be listed like 'DOS CD' or 'Windows CD' in ScummVM. I understand the DOS version of the game uses VESA graphics, is text only, and uses different cinematics and sounds. But can different versions be combined? So you can play the DOS version with VGA graphics, have voices, and the Windows cinematics? If that can be done in ScummVM does anyone know if that's possible in a native Windows/DOS environment?

Thanks

Both the Windows and DOS CD versions should have voices. I guess the floppy version doesn't, but I don't have that one. I haven't played them enough to know what the differences are. For the DOS version there should be an "Enable high resolution graphics" setting under "Game Options" that I guess makes it at least closer to the Windows one.

Interesting. Thanks for the heads-up. I wasn't aware of the DOS version being similar to the Windows one. I just have the non-talkie floppy version and the Windows CD version. I guess I'll have to try tracking down the DOS version.

EDIT: Hmm. According to Mobygames then, the CD version I have is the US release, which contains both the DOS and Windows versions. And yet when last I looked, I couldn't see any DOS installers, I don't think. I couldn't get anything to load under DOS and it said it was Windows only.

My "SierraOriginals" Gabriel Knight CD has INSTALL.EXE, which definitely is a DOS installer, and a SETUP.EXE that I assume is a Windows installer. The DOS installer allows me to choose between "CGA or IBM PS2 - 256 Colors" and "VESA - High Resolution (640x480) with 256 Colors" graphics modes. I had forgotten about that.

Huh. I'll have to take another look sometime in the day. Been trying to investigate and sort out other Windows 98 issues in the meantime. ^^;
