Gabriel Knight 2 Beast Within - perpetual subtitles nag screen

Post by feda »

Every time you run GK2 or try to load a save, it keeps harassing you with this ungrammatical nag screen that asks you to download some unofficial subtitles.
I do NOT want them. However, I cannot find a way to disable this function.
If I submit and click "download", it just leads to a dead browser link. But the nag message is still displayed every time!

How can I permanently prevent this nag screen?

That's weid. That's not happening on my end. I started up a new game, then saved, exited the game, went back in and loaded the save and I never got that werid message

This screen is shown when the "subtitles" option is turned on for the game. In this case it might just be turned on globally.
To avoid getting this screen go to the Audio tab for the game options, toggle on the box to override the global settings and select "Speech" for the Text and speech option.

Also thank you for the grammar corrections.

Thanks. You're right, that was the cause! Switching to "speech" globally and disabling the override fixes the problem.
Weirdly, if I enable override in game options and select "speech", it still shows the message.

This could be an issue caused by the way ScummVM currently handles enabling and disabling the global settings override.

A similar issue was recently reported for King's Quest 7 that brought up the more general issue of how the game settings should be updated in the scummvm configuration file in this case.
