ScummVM doesn't recognize Game- Installer is outdated and can't be executed

i was trying to check a few old games for compatibility that should be Director games.
The Installer is too old and won't run on Windows 10 even with compatibility mode so i pointed ScummVM at the CD-root and was hoping to get some results , especially with "deep search".
Unforunately all we can find are the Demos that are included on some of the discs, but not the main game.

Is there a way to get this "Profi Install for Windows 3.1" stuff to be recognized without resorting to the labour and hassle of a Virtual Machine and finding a copy of Windows 3.1?
The ".DXR"".AIF" & ".cs" files clearly indicate Macromedia Director being involved here

Interesting, it installed the game, but it can't run it stable enough.

I scanned the new folder again with ScummVM but it can't find a game.
The binary for the first test case is labeled as "projector skeleton" as original filename and Version 5.0.1.
Emulating win3.1 shouldn't be required to successfully use such old games either.
What is necessary for ScummVM to detect a Director game in a folder?

which game(s) are we talking about anyway?

maybe its so rare or uncommon that none of the devs had a chance to check and integrate it yet?

just because it looks like a director game doesnt mean it is based on the engine and even if it is, it might not supported(yet?) for other reasons.

I am rather sure that both are Director games.
The XTras folder even has the usual suspects:

Usually in such cases, ScummVM would detect it as a Director game and tell us some hash to report it as "new" on the bugtracker and we can figure out which director version it is from the debug menu and console log.
That it won't irritates me.

especially macromefia 5 and you'll find your games listed

what version of scummvm do you use?
have you tried with a daily build?

the release versions tend to drop unsupported games, so they are not as suited for testing

The Director games have limited compatibility. Testing a random title may lead to various issues, and there is little sense in reporting it to the team, especially for Director 5 titles.

Only for the games in the compatibility list do we welcome bugreports.

It was windows-x86-64-master-460a7c57 , but it does not matter that much i guess.
I am well aware that Director is a mine field and the user experience can change a lot between games. This is not about creating bug reports because a game does not work, i don't expect them to.
I expect scummvm to recognise the game as director game though and maybe ask me to report a new "unknown game variant md5" to the bugtracker.
Why would that part of the code not trigger and tell me "no games found" although it iterated over all files and subfolders ?

Also, is there a way to make the 16bit process more smooth and get rid of the vm/winevdm step in between so for the second game we can just copy the content of the cd on a 32bit machine? Feels like a big hurdle for the average user.

maybe when the games get officially supported that step will be gone, who knows?

Also, since you already need that step to install/extract the data that might be the reason it doesn't fire the fallback, because no one spent time on those extra steps (yet)?

Maybe the Oscar the Balloonist problem will be gone then, but what can we do about cap&co? The binary .exe should be classified by ScummVM as Director even if it doesn't know the game.
Did the publisher do something different?

I'd rather think, since those games are unsupported, the fallback has been turned off, but that's just another educated guess

It was a mistake on my side,
these files needed to be decompressed via expand on windows before they are recognised by ScummVM.
I had only changed the extension from .ex_ to .exe and that was not enough
