Why was BUN / SOU compression removed?

Post by Robot_Maker20 »

The whole post is in the title, really; was quite surprised to find out today that Monkey Island 3 and The Dig have fallen silent on my computer, because apparently support for the sound compression I used to convert my original copies to take up less space all those years ago (it was mp3 format, I think?) has been dropped during some recent update of ScummVM. Can anyone please explain why? This change seems to have come out of the blue, and rather feels like a step backwards; if I recall correctly, ScummVM must've had this useful feature for something like two decades now, and suddenly it's gone. I'm not sure if my original game media are even readable any more, so is there a way to convert the compressed files back again? If there isn't, I'm a bit stuck!

The new and more accurate implementation of the digital iMuse sound engine in ScummVM requires the uncompressed original form of the games' files for sound.

Here's a thread where this was discussed in a bit more detail:

I am unsure of a way to get a working "uncompressed" version of the files from their compressed version. My guess would be no. You'll need the original ones. As far as I know, these games are on CDs so there's high probability that they're still quite readable by your PC (provided you still have a CD drive to read them).

Thanks; I did do a forum search to see if anyone had mentioned it, but I failed to find that thread.
