Emudeck install poofed my saves

Post by Yamakaze »

So, good news is, I was only playing one game at the time. The Longest Journey from GOG.

On my Legion Go I installed scummvm from the site and progressed into the game.

I installed Emudeck from their site, the whole pack, not knowing scummvm came bundled.

Upon going back into scummvm, background changed from orange to blue and basically, my TLJ saves were gone.

I scoured the hard drive and came up with nothing. No, I didn't use cloud backup...

Please help.

Assuming Windows. Got anything in %AppData%\ScummVM\Saved Games ? If not, probably gone.

Which version of ScummVM (standalone) were you running?
When you run ScummVM (standalone) again, does the game entry for The Longest Journey still show up on the first launcher screen (on the games list or grid view) ?

The two places to search at would be:
1. Under your global saves path for your ScummVM standalone installation. The default location is mentioned here: https://docs.scummvm.org/en/latest/use_ ... velocation, but you could have set a custom global path, in which case that path could be found under Global Options -> Paths -> Save Path.
2. Under a potential specific saves path for this game entry, if you set a one. The location would show up, if you select the game entry from the ScummVM launcher and then go to Game Options -> Paths -> Save Path.

As far as I know the saved games for The Longest Journey by default are named eg. "tlj-win.001", "tlj-win.002" and so on.
The name would be different though depending on whether you have other entries for this game, or if you set a custom game ID for it under Game Options -> Game -> ID. In the latter case, the prefix of the saved games naming scheme would be the custom game ID you'd set.

I downloaded the latest one off here, so I assume Emudeck package install was the latest also.

When it got installed, the paths changed and TLJ was not on the games list, had to add it again.

Searching for the files yields nothing. This seems like something people should be warned of, at no point was there warning game saves would be purged if I already had an install...

If you're on Windows, there's no scenario that I can think of, that the ScummVM saved games are deleted without the user explicitly deleting them (either by accident or not).

Granted, I have never run emudeck so I don't know if it would have such a side-effect, but:
a) That seems very unlikely and
b) You'd have to report this to the emudeck developer team

Something happened that is specific to your configuration.

@Yamakaze

maybe do the unthinkable... :)

add the longest journey again to your emudeck.
start, save and search for the save, if you found it, it may also give a lead as to where the rest is

I did add it, the path is emulation/saves which is a different path and a new and empty folder.

I suppose I'll replay it from the beginning. And never update ever, without backing saves up...

Well. I booted up my Legion Go and my Downloads folder was empty.

Got mad. Started digging. Turns out it wasn't. Files were hidden.

No idea why that would happen, I suspect syncing options and me using same Windows account across devices.

Guess where my TLJ saves were. Right where scummvm said they were, the first install path. But hidden.

I am turning off anything with the words sync, cloud or backup forever.
