I'm want to get my PS2 modded (its the old version, not the slimline) and I know NOTHING about getting it modded.

So...please answer all my questions

1. Why are there different types of modchips?

2. Do different modchips have any different effects from them?

3. Does ANY back-up/burned/bootleg/modded games work on ANY type of modchip?

4. Do different modchips require different back-up/burned/bootleg/modded games? For instance, I'm just making a scenario, if there's a 'Crystal' modchip, and then there's a 'Emerald' modchip, do you have to buy 'Crystal' modded games to play on the 'Crystal' modded PS2?

5. Can you download PS2 games off the Internet? I have a friend who says he downloads PS2 games off the Internet and burns them onto a disc and can then play them on his PS2. Is this true?

6. Can you still play original store-bought games if you get your PS2 modded?

7. Can you still play online with your original store-bought games even if you get your PS2 modded?

8. Can you play modded/burned/bootleg PS2 games online?

Please answer all my questions clearly so that I can understand. I'm 25 years old and my children are always telling me getting the PlayStation 2 modded is a great choice. Thanks for your time!
