Future wars is supported!

Post by md5 »

I've just checked the daily changelog and it seems that the people working with ScummVM have improved the cinE engine, so ScummVM now supports yet another game: Future Wars! I haven't seen any announcement about it, just this:

http://www.scummvm.org/compatibility.php?details=fw

so I thought a little "thank you" post would be nice :)

Well done people, very nice work, Future Wars is a great game :)

More info about the game can be found at:

To give credit where credit is due, this was done by assimilating another project. Hopefully someone will have the necessary skill, knowledge and - last but not least - time to complete it.

Yes, I finally got some time to implement proper game detection which was only thing which prevented from adding FW to compatibility list. All is thanks to excellent RE work by one of ScummVM founders yaz0r. He kindly passed to us all materials, and Future Wars is completable with it.

So, please, test, test and test. Also submit bugreports. Amiga and Atari versions start, but crash in a while.

Operation Stealth is too buggy now and has many code missing.

Please, submit a proper bugreport for this. I'll need your feedback.

You should get a sourceforge account, and then you can submit a new bugreport. There you will also find:

Check you are including all the following information in your bug report:

* ScummVM version (scummvm -v)
* Bug details, including instructions on reproducing
* Language of game (English, German, ...)
* Version of game (Talkie, Floppy, ...)
* Platform and Compiler (Win32, Linux, ...)
* Attach a save game if possible
* If this bug only occured recently, please note the last version without the bug, and the first version including the bug. That way we can fix it quicker by looking at the changes made.

The bug tracker can be found on the ScummVM project page on SourceForge (the "Bugs" link).

The standard response on what to include in a bug report is this:
  • ScummVM version (PLEASE test the latest CVS/Daily build)
  • Bug details, including instructions on reproducing it
  • Language of game (English, German, ...)
  • Version of game (talkie, floppy, ...)
  • Platform and Compiler (Win32, Linux, MacOS, ...)
  • Attach a save game if possible
  • If this bug only occurred recently, please note the last version without the bug, and the first version including the bug. That way we can fix it quicker by looking at the changes made.
Though in this case, it's probably enough to briefly describe the bug (that screen shot may be useful) and specify the language and version of the game.

Which data files are needed by ScummVM to run Future Wars?

I have:
LVDT.0
VOL.1
VOL.2
VOL.3
BASESON.SND
TEXTE.DAT
LVDT.DIR
VOL.END
PART01
PART02
PART03
PART04
PART04B
LVDT.CFG
PART01.PAL
PART02.PAL
PART03.PAL
PART04.PAL
PART04B.PAL
AUTO00.PRC

Do I need all of these or can I cut a few out?

Since the whole thing is less than 1 MB, I never bothered to figure out which are were necessary, and which aren't. A wild guess would be that you don't need the VOL.1, VOL.2, VOL.3, VOL.END and LVDT.CFG files.

At least in the version I have, the total size of those five files is 10 bytes...

I'am disapointed that SCUMMVM does not use the redbook audio CD Tracks but only adlib music while playing the Sony CD-ROM release of Future Wars.

This release is actually designed to play the 29 audio tracks while playing the game, as it does when playing in Dosbox.

The Music Quality is the same on the CD-ROM release as the Game Soundtrack CD-rom which was included in the Atari ST and Amiga first releases of the Game.

A quick search shows up the reasons why we don't support the audio tracks.

We'd be grateful for any volunteers (such as yourself) to implement this. Of course, it doesn't help that (as far as I know) no developer has the disc either.
