Grog melting - Secret of Monkey Island

I apologise if this has been posted before, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Has anyone found an easy way - or has managed - to get the grog from the Chef's kitchen to Otis' cell lock without the mug melting?

If my memory serves me correctly, you have to get the grog and click frantically to get to the cell and use the grog on the cell's lock.

If I'm wrong, all the better.
