General Problem with Scumm and NAS (Synology 406@RAID5)

Post by dr.zeissler »

Hello,

I have a general problem with just all adventures that are placed on a network harddisk. The problem is, that every few seconds the sound and the graphics stutter. This is not a problem of your fantastic scumm engine, it is because the network harddisk can not transfer the data fast enough.

So please add an 1-2mb Cache-Function to your engine.

Or are there already tweaks in order to fix this ?

IMO adding a cache to ScummVM is the wrong way to tackle this problem. Rather, your operating system / your file system should do proper caching. I.e. the problem is on the system side, not in ScummVM.

Sorry but this does not help me...

For example:
1. Playing Videos from the NAS with VLC
2. Playing Videos from the NAS with Quicktime

VLC has no built in cache function, so the videos stutter all the time. Quicktime has the cache funktion so there is no stuttering at all.

Are there any other ways to prevent this stuttering in scumm without copying the files to the local drive ?

Hardware:
1. MacMini
2. SMC 100Mbit Router
3. Synology NAS 406 1.6TB RAID5 (Samsung 400GB HDD's 16MB Cache)
