I've seen sites that have Maniac Mansion under Abandonware. I also see reports that Maniac Mansion is now free, which one is it? I just don't want to be some sick freak who downloads Abandonware so I'm making sure.

Hi, there is a fanmade version of MM which is Freeware.
It is called Maniac Mansion deluxe.
You can easyli find it and download that one and
avoid to be a pirate or freak or whatever .....

a thing ive never understood is, game company's make games so they can get money... but then there no longer sold(in retail) so the company no longer makes any money from sales

so why should they care what anyone does with them?

because they can - it's theirs, they made it

Companies like Revolution and the FOTAQ guys are nice enough to allow redistribution, but especially for game franchises or change of company ownership determining the legal situation is a nightmare - and such a legal investigation costs money (take Discworld - as far as I know one company wrote the game, another company owns the characters. Take Kyrandia - who owns the rights to storyline etc?) So in the end these companies would need to pay money to give the games away for free

and just because some companies have not taken action yet it does not mean they won't do in the future - as is explained in the Copyright FAQ, ScummVM will not risk conflict with copyright holders
