CMI: Is this a bug or is the game just weird?

Post by JohnnyWalker2001 »

Can anyone help me discover if there's something wrong here or not? I'm playing Curse of Monkey Island in NORMAL MODE and I've arrived on Blood Island. Griswold Goodsoup has mentioned that the door to the lodger's room has been locked because it's haunted and Guybrush can ask if he'll open it for him (which he refuses to do)... Except it's already open!

Is this a bug in the game? Is it ScummVM being weird? Is it referring to MEGA-MONKEY MODE? I understand from a guide I looked at that Stan's card can be used to unlock the door... except, like I said, it's already unlocked.

What's going on?

Thanks!

I've never played the game on Easy but, yes, in Mega-Monkey the door is locked and must be picked open. I assume that the dialogue you mention is simply extraneous in the mode you are playing in. I doubt that it's a bug.

That surely is a bug, then. Perhaps someone else can verify?

No, that's not a bug

When you free Stan, he hands you his laminated business card. In Mega-Monkey, you use this card to Jimmy open one of the doors upstairs. In normal mode, the door is already open

Then it's definitely a bug then... Why does Guybrush keep asking the bartender to unlock the door upstairs when it's already open? That shouldn't be an option in the game.

So it's either a bug in ScummVM or in the game...

Er.. are you sure you're talking about the door upstairs and not the door to the crypt?

Yes, I'm sure I'm talking about the door upstairs ("it was locked to keep the ghoul that haunts it at bay" or something) and not the crypt.

Either it's bug in the game or ScummVM.

Ok, I just checked. Guybrush actually asks:

"Would you let me into that guest room upstairs?"

Goodsoup replies:

"No! That room is locked for a reason."

Yet, as everyone seems to agree, the room is UNLOCKED in Normal Mode. I don't recall this error in CMI when I first played it in XP. Could it be a ScummVM bug?

Perhaps this phrase is a bug in the original game, which was left in by mistake in normal mode?

Yep, thank goodness somehow is actually believing me now! It's a weird ass bug that's either in the original game (and surely people would have spotted it) or it's in ScummVM.

Is anyone able to play the game natively, without ScummVM, who can test this?
