ScummVM graphics problem

Post by Dave'O »

I thought it was about time I upgraded my copy of ScummVM, (still useing 0.8.2) however I have found that with the newer version many of the games are displayed in a letter box format (ie black bars along the top and botem), I have tryed useing aspect ratio corection but then the gams seems sort of blury and then sometimes appears to be strectche to tall, I wouldn't worry but it's just that the quality (with HQ2X) in the latest version is so much higher, any ideas?

The firstest thing you'll have to tell us is whether you're playing in full-screen or windowed mode. If full-screen, then using HQ3x or any other 3x scaler instead, as this will reduce the resolution difference between the screen's actual resolution and ScummVM's.

Sorry, I've tried useing full screen with HQ3x (since my first post), but haven't made any progress, all the FM-Towns games play fine with this setting but the PC games are letterboxed, however when I use aspect correction on these they get stretched to tall. I have tried ajusting the screen size manualy with the monitor, but when I get back to my desktop it is all streched of the side of the screen (i presume this is because wit these settngs ScummVM is operateing at the same resolution and refresh rate as my desktop).
Howcome I didn't have these problems before (with 0.8.2)?

Edit: Just as a side note, I've had the same aspect problem with dosox 0.70 (for my sierra games), but there wer no major improvemnts for what I was useing it for so I just kept useing 0.65

Edit2: I know how aspects work (320x200 becomes 640x400 not 640x480 which is the reason for the letterboxing) i just don't know why the old versions (of ScommVM & Dosbox) played fine wheras the new ones don't?

That'S indeed odd -- nothing major changed since 0.8.2 in the graphics code.

Also, no, that#s not how aspect correction works: Aspect ratio correction stretches a 320x200 game to 320x240 (which is why it doesn't do anything for the FM-TOWNS games, those are already 320x200). You can then apply a scaler, e.g. any 2x scaler will now upscale the game to 640x480 (instead of 640x400), and so on.

Finally, note that DOSBox 0.72 is current.

You mean 320x240, I assume. I though that only applied to the v3 games (Zak, Loom and Last Crusade?), not the other FM-TOWNS games.

Though I don't have any of them myself, so what do I know. :)

I've figured out the reason for the letterboxing, with the old version the image (without aspect correction) was 640x400, but the monitor had it streched out to the full size of the monitor (the beauty of CRT). However it saves thoes setings not just resolution specific but resolution & refresh rate specific, and so the new version is running at a different referesh rate where it's not streched to the full space of the monitor, so all I need to do is strech it.
And that's the problem, and it's why the problem happened also happened in DosBox (but i'm not going to go through the fiddle of upgradeing Dosbox since 0.65 [or whatever] runs all my sierra games properly anyway).

As for HQ3x looking to tall with aspect correction, I think it was just ajusting to the difference from super2xsai

so anyway problem sloved
