Sam and Max on Mac

Post by jemoore113 »

First of all, let me say this is a great program, and I love being able to run my old PC games. I've successfully been able to play Monkey Island, Indiana Jones, and Loom. However, for some reason, when I try to start Sam & Max, ScummVM just quits. No error message, nothing. The files in the directory I'm trying to run it from are:
MONSTER.SOU
SAMNMAX.SM0
SAMNMAX.SM1
These are the only files I found on the required list on the wiki. Any ideas?

Just realized I should clarify one thing. I'm running the ScummVM under MacOS X. The Sam and Max files are from the PC floppy.

The fact that you're using the PC Floppy version under the Mac OS X port of ScummVM shouldn't make any difference. Have you tried re-copying the data files from the floppy, in case they got corrupted in the transfer or some such? That would be my first thought.

Yes, I've tried to recopy it, so unless the files were already corrupted before I copied them (I hope not) then it's something else.

ScummVM definitely prints out an error message.

Run it from the console to see.

or use Console in the Utilities folder to check the output of the crash.

Thanks for the tip. The error message says:

IMuse initialization - Device not available!

That's the kind of error you'd get if ScummVM can't initialise the MIDI driver. As a workaround, you could change the Music driver setting to "Adlib" instead. However, that's far from ideal since Sam & Max, unlike the earlier games, does not have any music specifically written for Adlib.

From what I understand, the Mac version of ScummVM has a couple of different MIDI drivers: CoreAudio, CoreMIDI and QuickTime. I have absolutely no idea what the difference between them is, but could you try and see if any or them works for you?

Hey, it worked!
I set the driver to QuickTime and it seems to run fine.
Thanks a lot!
