What ticks for games with ScummVM?

Probably you already answered this question somewhere, in that case i did not see it..

What is it in the games that makes it work with ScummVM?
Is it added new things all the time to ScummVM that are specifik for new games?
Or is it something in general in ScummVM that works and then it just tweaks for the games so they work?
