Error while compressing san file

I tried to use compress_san on CHASOUT.SAN from the "full throttle" game.
After many tries to get the right syntax, I got this instead:

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

Can anyone tell what is wrong here?
Bad version of lame?
Or something else?
(and why do I have to convert every file seperate?)
