Broken Sword 2 - ERROR: Could not open light mask

Post by zcott »

Broken Sword 2: Smoking Mirror locks up
After several minutes of play (5-10 minutes) BS2 locks up

A few time I have received the following DEBUG screen...
ScummVM 0.11.1 (Feb 28 20085 13:14:14)
Console is ready
Debugger stored, type 'exit' to return to game.
Type 'help' to see a little list of commands and variables.
ERROR: Could not open light mask

The same thing happened with firmware 3.80 M33-5
Upgraded to 3.90 M33-3 -- still happens

Had not problems with Broken Sword 1

Does the same thing happen on the PC version of ScummVM? This could have to do with broken datafiles (or the PSP running out of memory?)

Funny. I, want to write about it too =)

Slim 3.90 m33-3 (no plugins), scummvm 0.11.1 (0.10.0, 0.11.0), BS2 (RUS) 2CD from MEDIAHOUSE (http://www.mediahouse.ru/catalogue.html?sel=1122388487)

Earlier or later (5-20 min) but game shutdown the console when changes locations or the beginning of dialogue with somebody.
With the PC version of scummvm has no problems (at least until Quaramonte City. On the psp it was much more difficult ~ 20 shutdowns=)

Two times i have force abort game to XMB with debugger warning about light mask. But after relaunching scummvm, everything was fine.

No problem running it on the PC
Already replaced/reloaded and configured datafiles
4GB of memeory (1.5GB free)

PROBLEM:
Plays for 5-10 minutes then locks-up and shuts-down

My first guess would be out of memory.

If you can compile ScummVM yourself I would suggest trying disabling all engines but sword2 and see if the problem goes away.

Memory is not the problem... I've had up to 2.5GB of free memory and still have this problem

Also, I had no problem running Broken Sword 1

Searching thru this forum several others also have this problem

Does anyone know what this error is????
ERROR: Could not open light mask

I poked around with google code search, and apparently openLightMask returns which error (out of memory or problem with datafile). Which is then ignored by the error message and a generic error message is displayed.

Please tell me where I can get a PSP with over 2.5GB of RAM.

Broken Sword 1 and 2 are two entirely separate game engines. I haven't checked which is the more memory hungry one. I'm just saying that you can't really draw conclusions about one based just on the other.

I do not know how to do it correctly. Someone could compile this version of ScummVM (bs2 only engine)? =)

I think, if this is a problem with RAM size, it is a problem of all PSP systems. Or I am wrong?

Can someone please try this build and see if it makes a difference?

This is a more stable build. For testing, im started playing from beginning. Only once game has shutdown the console, at least until Ketch's Landing (completly first cd ~ 2,5 hours gameplay summary with restarting). It seems to leak memory.
Joostp thanks for quick help! =)

What do you mean by that "build"?
I have exactly the same problem as zcott.
Thanks.

The ScummVM executable is too big and there is no memory left for Broken Sword 2. Try the executable that joostp posted, which has only the Broken Sword 2 engine built in (meaning that is much smaller than the full executable), so that you have enough memory to play the game

Excuse me, but the "built" joostp posted does not include an "exe" file. All the files have the name EBOOT.PBP. What do I do with such a file???
