No music in Monkey Island 1

Post by DevilShroom »

(Running Vista)
Ok here's the pitch.

I'm running Secret of Monkey Island from the 'Monkey Island Bounty Pack Collection' CD (MI1 & 2) are on the same disk. The music and sound in the MI1 game is not working, however it is working fine in MI2. These games are being run directly from the CD.

I've searched and read around and alot of the time it's being said you have to rip the audios from the CD and put them in the directory. However this is obviously a problem for me because the CD IS the directory. So I thought the resolution would be to put the files from the CD onto my hard disk, HOWEVER, and this is a bit weird, because vista doesn't support the first two monkey island games it hasn't actually officially installed them from the CD onto my computer. This means there's nothing to do with MI1 & 2 from the CD on my computer, no program files, nothing, everything is from the CD.

So I'm at the end of my rope a bit here. Searched around for ages, read through the readme a few times (which I distinctly remember being much more helpful the first time I used ScummVM for some reason but whatever) and just can't get an answer for this.

NOTE:
Please please please, if anyone knows how to fix this when you give my instructions take it slooooow and I mean slow. Baby steps. I'm really not very good with computers at all and when phrases such as (just a fictional example):
'Assuming you downloaded through syndetic 6.995 and you're soundcard is linnex-averted etc.'
My instant reaction is..
'0_0! What?!'

you do not need to install anything, just copy the gamefiles to a directory and add te game in scummvm from there. then rip the tracks and put them in the same folder naming them track1.mp3/ogg/flac, track2.xxx and so on.

Did and done and unfortunately still no sound.

What exactly is a 'directory'? I assume it's just where ever you get the game from so to speak but I'm thinking perhaps my misunderstanding is complicating this.

Just so you know what I did. I went to drive which had the game CD in, opened it up, copied everything inside and then pasted them in,
'C:/program files/lucasarts'
(This file already houses my MI3 and 4)
I then ripped the audio tracks from the CD using WMP, this ripped them as wma so I had to convert them to mp3. I then copied and pasted all of these mp3s into that same folder mentioned.

did you name them correctly? (track1.mp3, track2.mp3 and so on).

in scummvm press "Edit Game" -> got to the "paths" tab and point the "Extra" path to /programfiles/lucasarts/.

A directory is the same as a folder.

Omg! Yes!

Thank you, it's working now.

I know it was a ludicriously stupid and simple question to begin with but like I said, I'm not good at this sort of thing. Thanks once again for all your help.

I have the exact same problem, though I'm having trouble getting the audio tracks off the CD. Can anyone explain exactly how to do this? I went to WMP and tried to rip them but it says it's not an audio CD so I cannot rip them. Any ideas?

both wmp and iTunes or any other mp3ripper should be able to do that just fine. what version of MI do you have?

The collection that has the first two on one cd.

Edit: What specifically do I rip? When I open the CD in iTunes it shows a bunch of separate files.

should be 21 tracks or so if I remember correctly? the first one might be the data track, but I highly doubt it, rip all of them and name them track1.mp3, track2.mp3 and so on, stick them in a folder, direct the extras path as described above and Bob's your uncle.

if you're not sure if the first track is an audio track or the gamedata, just play it in iTunes first and se if it contains music, if not, just skip it.

There are no tracks inside the CD. Here are the names of all of the files: Adlib.ims, Monkey.exe, Monkey.config, Monkey(dos shortcut), Monkey.000, Monkey.001, Roland.ims, Soundlbas.ims, and Speaker.ims

Edit: This is kind of odd, there are no problems playing Monkey Island Two with sound, it works fully but there are none of these tracks on there either.

Not particularely strange since MI2 doesn't use cd tracks;)
The reason you can't "see" the audio tracks is because your cd is mixed mode(e.g. there is one track for the datafiles you mentioned and a separate track for the cd audio.) hence track 1 most propably contains ony useless data when you rip it to mp3 but you should still have no problem ripping the rest of the tracks in itunes. just pop it in and press convert.

When I pop the CD in it doesn't pop up in iTunes. There aren't any audio tracks on the CD. There are a total of nine files in the folder and none of the will show up in WMP or iTunes.

none of them should show up in iTunes but the tracks should and I can se no reason why they wouldn't. if you have a regular cd player you can test your disc there, it will play like any regular audio cd.

try Exact Audio copy instead:

Track one is the only track that shows up that program, there are no other tracks on there and I don't believe it will let me rip it.
