Screen cuts off part of text

I'm using a widescreen 1440 X 990 monitor and whenever I start Scummvm, no matter what game I'm playing, it cuts off a bit of the left hand side of the screen, making it difficult to choose text options because you have to guess the first word or two. Any ideas on how I can fix this? I tried aspect ratio correction but it makes it only a little better.

This may be a stupid question, but have you checked that it's not simply a matter of adjusting your monitor?

I attempted that but every time I do it just pushes something else off the screen. I've currently found an adjustment where it's slightly cut off on both ends, so I can live with it if no fix exists.

Well, normally, you can also adjust the size of the screen on the monitor, not just the position...
