It is commonly stated that the AGI version was only available through the mail-in offer in the SCI version (send them a few bucks and your SCI discs, and they would send you the AGI discs).
While this was possible, there was a boxed AGI copy sold in stores. My copy still has the price tag of $14.99 on it and a receipt in the box indicating it was purchased at a Radio Shack.
At that price I am also guessing it had been sitting on the shelf for a while, as there was only one run of the boxed AGI version.

KQ II first came out 1985 as a disk that booted on start-up redone 1987 with EGA support for DOS. This is why most remaining copies are copyright 87 instead of 85.
The Apple II version has better sound than the PC.
Due to rather bad sales of the 1990 remake of KQ II, the plan for officially for re-releasing KQ II was scrapped. But, in 2002, AGD Interactive, then known as Tierra Entertainment, released a fan-made remix of King's Quest II.
