10: Full Throttle

Well, as I see, your lists contain a bit much of LucasArts...

1. The Longest Journey
2. Monkey Island 1
3. Broken Sword 1
4. Discworld Noir
5. Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes 2
6. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
7. Grim Fandango
8. Simon the Sorcerer 1
9. Syberia 1+2 (for they cannot be separated)
10. Secret Files Tunguska

Ok, I am not quite sure whether this is the correct order, but that should actually be the top ten.

I am still wondering that most people here believe that at least 50% (and for some up to 100%) of the Top 10 adventures are by Lucas Arts. Isn't that an a bit singular view?

Absolutely, when everyone knows the best 10 adventure games were made by Infocom (text adventures). :D

I don't think all the Infocom games have aged gracefully, but some still seemed quite good to me last time I played them. (Long ago.) My favorites back then were Enchanter, Deadline and A Mind Forever Voyaging, with honorable mentions to Plundered Hearts and Journey.

Except that Journey has this really annoying puzzle at the very end. The first time you get that far, you'll probably discover that you a) already used up the magical essences you need, and b) have no clue which of the magical reagents to use.

Perception is a funny thing. I remember Witness as being a very well done detective story when I first played it. Many years later I started it again using Frotz and it seemed so badly written from a prose standpoint. What had happened in the intervening years was that I had gotten familiar with Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Ross Macdonald. In comparison, naturally the writing in Witness appeared crap. On the other hand, AMFV stands up pretty well. And of course H2G2 and Bureacracy by virtue of having had Douglas Adams involved.

English isn't my native tongue, so I can't really judge the prose that well. I remember being vaguely disappointed at how easy the game was to solve once I got into the mindset of it, and that I thought the plot was a bit contrived. It's amusing in some ways, though: From what I remember, you can solve the game without ever leaving the office where the murder takes place. And it's one of the few games that uses the "Tandy bit".

Still, both Deadline and The Witness impressed me with the way the human characters were handled. Sure, they acted the same way every time you played, but at least they seemed intelligent, unlike the actors in, say, The Hobbit.
