OK, I tried a build of scummvm a few days ago, I don't know which one, but the interface was similar to this site, pressing 'up' on the dpad opened the ingame options menu (F5) and down opened the onscreen keyboard...
I don't know what I've done, but it no longer does any of that. The interface is the old style, I can't open the keyboard and now '-' opens the F5 menu.
What version was the first one I tried? how do I get back to that?
noob problems.. :(

I'd guess you maybe updated via the HBC? 
Use one of Bossk's builds found here (scroll down to find the download). I recommend scummvm-wii-0.14.0svn_r41094 at the moment as I've had some performance issues with the very latest build.
