Discowlrd II - "Null String"

Post by MustrumRidcully »

Iv been having a fantastic time reliving my childhood playing though the first Discworld game and having completed I moved onto the second game but iv been having trouble getting the game working it all seems fine until I finished the intro movies and enter the game proper when the voices stop working and all they say is “Null String” iv searched though this forums but all I can find is people saying make sure that iv renamed the English files on CD 1 to engligh1 and CD 2 to english2 respectively, iv also got the latest version of scummvm
Any help would be rely appreciated

I'm going to go ahead and assume you run Windows.

When you have ScummVM running not-fullscreen, you can see the DOS-prompt window on your desktop that tells you some stuff that is going on with ScummVM.
What does that window say? It should give a clue what the ScummVM can't find exactly.

---

By "the latest version of scummvm" you mean the Win32 ScummVM Daily Snapshot at the very BOTTOM of this page right?

---

My guess is that you renamed or copied the files wrong anyway :)
You do have "hide extensions for known file types" disabled in your file explorer, right? (tools>folder options>view)

---

You DID copy all the files to the hard drive, right? You are NOT playing the game straight from the CD I hope.

You need to rename the game's text and audio files (*.smp, *.txt and *.idx), as described in our wiki page:

Mine worked when I renamed them to 'us1.idx' and 'us2.idx' instead of 'english1.idx' and 'english2.idx' respectively. The same went for .txt and .smp.

Not sure if that's an 'official' solution - but it doesn't hurt to try.

I quickly checked my own D2 files, you have definitely done the wrong swicheroo.
My ENGLISH2.SMP is 105 MB and my ENGLISH1.SMP is 235 MB.

Gogo delete and recopy all the *1* and *2* files.

Bobdevis you are a god among men, when I was copying the files from the CS’s I must have popped them in the wrong folders. I can’t believe I did something so stupid. Thanks so much for all your help I’m just off to relive my childhood all over again
