Well there is a lot of fun to be had with avatars. The challenge is in the constrains! It invites people to learn a bit about photo editing tools to be able to cram your 'thing' into 90x90p 10KB pic with perfection. Especially if you go for the gradual png transparancy.

Ofcause not everybody cares, but hey.....


Ps, Oh and use The Gimp! Photoshop is senseless non-free overkill unless you actually KNOW you need it.
