What about if you just start ScummVM without any arguments?
Just type 'scummvm' and use the GUI to select the game.

What exactly does happen when you try to start the game? Does ScummVM just crash? Does it just return to the launcher?

Could you check whether you got a file called "DELPHINE.LNG"?

Earlier in the game's development the copy protection screen was one of the things that wasn't implemented. Now it is. There have been discussions about copy protection in the past that you can search for, but basically, ScummVM always implements the copy protection of the original games, unless:
1) The game has been officially made freeware
2) There was an officially released version of the game without copy protection, in which case ScummVM will skip the copy protection for that version of the game.

In the case of Cruise for a Corpse, as far as I'm aware all versions of the game have the copy protection screen.
