Simon the Sorcerer - App Store

Post by Graxer »

I bought Simon the Sorcerer on the App Store and extracted the files so that I can play it on my PC using ScummVM. (I also downloaded the higher bitrate version of James Woodcock's enhanced tracks from his website.)

It plays perfectly. I noticed however that the files aren't consistant with any specific version listed on ScummVM's datafiles page. Does it work as a hybrid of various versions or does anyone know which ones are needed? (I removed all the files that weren't needed by any version)

Incase anyone is wondering, the only drawback of purchasing the game this way is that the voice files are compressed for the iPhone so not as high quality as the original. (As mentioned above the music files can be replaced)

The perfect playback is not surprising. The porter used the ScummVM source code, and has also used the same code to port Inherit the Earth, Simon the Sorcerer 2 and Flight of the Amazon Queen.

The datafiles provided with each version are most likely a collaboration of the various different versions to create a 'hybrid' version to provide the best version possible.

If I am not mistaken the porter actually contacted AdventureSoft to request permission to port Simon1/2.
Although I believe now they are donating some of the proceeds to the ScummVM team.

That surprises me. As far as I know, they used the Windows version of Simon the Sorcerer data files. However, maybe just someone at Adventure Soft "recompiled" the script files which uses some sort of random mechanism to make file reading harder and thus mixes structures leading to a different MD5.

Delurking because you mentioned the Simon iphone version.

Question, the preview videos show the games running with both subtitles & voices, is that accurate on how the game runs on the iphone? Do the audio and subs match?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-FoJwr-_aQ

And when you ran the extracted files on ScummVM, does it show both of them, or only one?

As in the video, the game runs on the iPhone with speech and subtitles. However, when played on ScummVM on the PC it is speech only.

This makes me wonder, should Simon the Sorcerer not show subtitles? (at least on the PC CD version which has voices) If not, is there no way to allow the subtitles to be read the way they are in the iPhone version?

I do wonder if that can be enabled in ScummVM. Think subtitles are blocked by default, and you can't enable them in the current build

I can confirm that they are blocked.

They are blocked, because Kirben thinks that subtitles shouldn't be supported when they are not completely available. I was told that when the letter of Calypso is read on the iPhone version, there are no subtitles. The same goes for the Windows version.

That was why I asked if "Do the audio and subs match?" , I knew that there were incomplete subtitles on the English cd version, and that they were blocked because of that.

The preview video had me wondering if the Iphone version had fixed that and had complete ones.

Seems that's not the case, can you check that Graxer? Have Simon read the letter? Just to be double check and be sure. :)

I just checked. The message from Calypso is not displayed in the subtitles. I dont see why there shouldn't be a "Speech and Subtitles" option though even though plain "subtitles only" would be insufficient.

Does this mean that it's also not possible to complete the iPhone version, just like it's not possible to complete the Talkie version with subtitles enabled (in earlier ScummVM versions)?

So, sorry to resurrect this relatively old thread, but is there any word on this? If I buy the iPhone version of Simon 1 and extract the game files from it, can I get ScummVM to play speech and display subtitles at the same time?

On a related note, is there a way to force the current version of ScummVM to enable the subtitles on any talkie version of Simon 1 (even though this makes the game impossible to complete)? Does anyone know which previous version(s) this was enabled in?

Was there ever a version of ScummVM that allowed that? There's a comment in the source code which states that "English and German versions [of Simon the Sorcerer 1] don't have full subtitles", and while the wording has changed slightly it's been there for the past seven years.

That would have been ScummVM 0.5.0. By then, Simon the Sorcerer had been supported for little over a year, and from what I remember it took a while before it became usable. (At least, Simon the Sorcerer 2 did.)

Huh. So, I tried 0.5.0... It does run the game, but I don't even see any option to change the behavior of the subtitles. Which seem to be disabled by default.

No word on how do to do this in current versions? I assume it's possible, since the iPhone version of ScummVM that runs Simon does it.
