I have too many Riven files...

Post by ezekiel000 »

I found that my files for Riven (I have the 5CD version from the Myst the Collection box set) don't match the list on the datafiles page. Here's my list of files:
* a_data.mhk
* a_sounds.mhk
* b2_data.mhk
* b_data1.mhk
* b_data.mhk
* b_sounds.mhk
* extras.mhk
* g_data.mhk
* g_sounds.mhk
* j_data1.mhk
* j_data2.mhk
* j_data3.mhk
* j_sounds.mhk
* o_data.mhk
* o_sounds.mhk
* p_data.mhk
* p_sounds.mhk
* r_data.mhk
* r_sounds.mhk
* t_data.mhk
* t_sounds.mhk

The file names in bold are the files I have but are not listed on the datafiles page, I was wondering why? Do I need them or is it an odd version?

This is probably redundancy because of the 5 disks thing.
Lets say you need a part of file A and a part of file B for some particular part of the game. A and B are on separate disks so yo make a file C with just the right parts of A and B.
When you remerge the game into one directory, file C becomes redundant.

OR, there is unused stuff in those extra files(!)
There is at least one hidden movie someone of the actor that plays the bad guy goofing off.

OR, Clone will tell us and I am just pointlessly speculating ;)

Anyway, the DVD version has these mystery files aswell. There are also identical datafiles (dupes) in differed directories. I guess they didn't bother cleaning up.

Many of the dupes though end up having different sizes.

I ended up taking the largest each time.

The idea of there being an A file and a B file that need to be merged to create a C file doesn't work considering you only ever have the A and B. At no point is there ever a merged file.

More likely it is like broken sword 2 where you have a speech file on both discs and they are completely different.

Again though, this is pointless speculating.

b_data1.mhk and j_data3.mhk are nothing from Riven 1.0 CD5, this from Riven Updater 1.02.

This is the "easter egg" file that contains image of the crew. We don't support that, nor plan on it. It was only accessible via the hidden command console in the original.

These are patch files that correct some issues from the original version. Not necessary, but recommended. I believe the 1.03 release and the DVD release incorporated these changes into the main data files. We do support these already.

If I recall correctly, the b_data1.mhk file patches some sound problems with the boiler puzzle and the j_data3.mhk file fixes something at the end of the rebel tunnel on Jungle Island.

Thanks Clone for this explanation!

But what about the "j_Sounds.mhk"? It's not mentioned in the datafiles but I am almost 100% sure it belongs to be included. Especially as all "x_data.mhk" files have a corresponding "x_sounds.mhk" file.

Hope you can tell us what it's about with the file too.

Sorry about that, missed putting it on the wiki. I added it now.

You need to run the original installer to get extras.mhk as it says here.
