Help with DOSBox MIDI output please!

All the inane chatter goes in here. If you're curious about whether we will support a game, post HERE not in General Discussion :)

Help with DOSBox MIDI output please!

Post by Milambian »

Hello! I am brand new here, and have just gotten into playing the old games from my childhood again (sudden wave of nostalgia hit me :) )! However, I am having a bit of a problem (I know this isn't to do with ScummVM, but hopefully someone here can help!)

I managed to dig out of my closet some old games, such as my Quest for Glory anthology, the Dig, and Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis. My question involves the MIDI output in DOSBox.

I am using a MIDI yoke to redirect my MIDI sounds to Timidity++, in order to use a nice soundfont. This is working GREAT for ScummVM, as well as windows media player for .MID files. However, I cannot seem to get DOSBox to do the same thing.

I have confirmed this is not working for DOSBox by creating a ScummVM profile for Indiana Jones Atlantis, as well as a DOSBox profile for the same game using D-Fend Reloaded frontend. When I start the game with ScummVM, the music is using the new soundfont, however DOSbox is not. I have tried manually editing the config files to tell the MIDI to output to the MIDI Yoke 1 with no success.

Obviously, I will use ScummVM for Fate of Atlantis, however I would like to play my Quest for Glory games with higher quality music as well!

Sorry for the long post, could anyone possibly help? Thanks!

(PS, ScummVM is amazing, thanks to all who work to develop it!)

You should do a search for the vogons forums, that's where all the dosbox guys hang out. Due to the nature of how dosbox works, I'm not entirely sure it is possible to do what you want to do though.

VOGONS is the official forums of DOSBox and is the place to ask for help with it. Almost everything that you need to know is is in the manual. In this case, look for MIXER. Additional information can be found in the configuration file.

Thanks for the links! I'll check over there :)

edit: I managed to figure out the problem, complete user error! I forgot the little detail that I had to emulate the install setup programs to tell the game to output MIDI sound. After doing that the MIDI output to a soundfont worked perfectly with DOSBox
