256 Color Maniac Mansion?

Post by cisco17 »

I've seen Zak MkCraken 16 color version and 256 color version.

I haven't been able to compare LFL files from those versionss , because I have not a tool to do it, there is one on scumm revisited but it only works with maniac mansion LFL files. But may be possible to convert LFL from Maniac Mansion 16 color scumm version to zak256 scumm version, then picking the images, replacing them by maniac mansion deluxe ones (for example) maintaining the rest of info (scripts, boxes, etc) so we can have a 256 maniac working with scumm?

I know I'm just guessing things around, but I'm intereset on answers from people with knowledge :D

Also, if there are tools (which I don't know), it can be possible to compare Monkey 1 16 color with 256 one, and with CD one, to convert Indy 3 version to Monkey CD (with icon items), or make Monkey CD use midi tracks from vga version, or convert maniac mansion to the scumm version used on day of the tentacle?

I guess, the problem is that AGS is close source and the internal structures are not documented. Thus, there is no easy way to just port it to SCUMM. This would require reverse engineering. And while the legal status is debatable, it is obviously not desired by Chris Jones:
AGS homepage wrote:The AGS file formats are proprietary to make it harder for people to "hack" other people's games. If the source code was available, it would be easy for someone to write some sort of de-compiler for use with other peoples games.

I think you haven't understood my message, maybe i expressed it bad.

What I mean to do is transform maniac mansion 16 color version LFL files from scumm version 1 (or 2, I don't know) to the version of scumm used on Zak 256 colors version, the one of fmtowns, that is the more similar version but with 256 colors, and then changing the 16 color graphics to 256 version, picking the ones from Maniac Mansion Deluxe (because they're already done) and encoding them on scumm format where the 16 color version are on the converted LFL manian mansion files...

I don't know if I expressed it better now...

Nearly everything is possible with Software. This, too. It just would be very hard and difficult, e.g. all the scripts would have to be decompiled and then recompile for a newer SCUMM version, things like that.

The question is, do decompilers or recompilers exist?

I have heard of Lucasrip, ScummGen, ScummC... but could this be possible with those utilities?

No. You would need utilities that currently do not exist, and/or adapt existing utilities to work together in ways they currently don't support; and even then you likely will need to do quite some manual work because certain changes in SCUMM will require human intervention.
