7th Guest on the Dreamcast?

Post by supercompman »

So I have the 7th Guest running quite well under ScummVM on both Windows and Linux (EXCELLENT work by the way...) but I'm trying to get it to run on the Dreamcast using version 0.13.1. ScummVM loads just fine, but then only displays "Please insert game CD". All other games I try seem to work fine, but this game isn't detected at all. The audio tracks from the CDs are compressed with MP3. Any suggestions?

UPDATE: Not only is the 7th Guest not detected, neither are FOTAQ, BASS, Drascula, or Lure... not really sure why that is...

While the 0.13.1 version of ScummVM will recognize the game just fine, it has at least one issue I've found, which I've submitted to the bug tracker.

Unfortunately the latest SVN build doesn't.

If you'd still like to make an attempt with the last stable build, 0.13.1, tell us how you tried burning the disc. Also make sure you copied all of the required files from the 2 discs. - http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Datafiles

It sounds like you have made a mistake somewhere: BASS, FOTAQ, Drascula etc. will be detected with 0.13.1, I can not state wether the 7th Guest works because I do not have that game yet.

What are you using (the boot disk or plainfiles)?.

Yep... you're completely right. I'm using the plain files and in my attempt to squeeze T7G onto a single CD along with ScummVM, I got a little over-zealous in removing "extra" files. I now have T7G working on the Dreamcast and the other games are properly detected as well. I have run into a few other bugs however that I'll make a new post for as it's not related to T7G at all. Thanks for the replies.

Actually that's why we have the Datafiles page on our wiki.

I'm new here too, but might I make a suggestion?

Per the forum rule guidelines, any bugs should be reported to the source-forge bug tracker, and not the forums.

I'm sure it wasn't a problem with the datafiles because supercompman had the 7th Guest running on Windows and Linux before attempting to run the game on the Dreamcast. I'm guessing that the required PLG files had been removed from the Dreamcast plainfiles package prior to creating a CD, that would explain why some games were not being detected.

Welcome to the forum :) .

The question wasn't really bug related, it was just an error when sorting the plainfiles for a Dreamcast CD. For single game Dreamcast disks it helps if you delete the plugins that are not required for that particular game, it also gives you a little more space for larger games, and also a little more space if you want to add a dummy file.

For the 7th Guest, the only Dreamcast plainfiles you need are:

GROOVIE.PLG
IP.BIN
SCUMMVM.BIN

Yep, that was exactly my situation... I removed the groovie.plg when attempting to create the disc. As for the other games, I had burned them to a separate disk... no plg files on the disc... of course scummvm won't recognize the games! I was just a little slow to realize that those were referring to the engines being used by the games. Looks like most everything I throw at scummvm now works well. The only problem I'm running into now is creating discs that actually boot properly... it seems a little hit or miss for me using Selfboot Inducer and some of the other selfboot tools, but that's nothing to do with scummvm :-)

Thanks again to everyone for their replies!

Don't forget that the Dreamcast port of ScummVM has disk swap support, you can use a boot disk with the complete plainfiles of the last official release (0.13.1), or even better - try out the latest Subversion Build.

If you have already burnt some games to CDR, swap those in after ScummVM boots, it'll save a few disks for testing each game, and you can always create a single game CD at a later stage when you are happy with a particular version of the port.
