Thanks for clearing that up about the PQ2 demo.
Maybe one to add in the first post for the demos wanted thread - once SCI is supported.

Laura Bow 2 Floppy

Post by PhiloHippus »

Wiki states it needs retesting, so here is the current status:

Game: Laura Bow 2 (Laura Bow and the Dagger of Amon Ra)
Game Version: Dos/English (Floppy)
ScummVM Version: 1.2.0Svn52268
OS: Windows 7 x64

Problems: Current blocker to completion is bug 3050606, which causes the game to hang near the end of Act 5 (very near to the end of the game).

I managed to reconstruct PQ2's resource.001 file.
Now it's a valid sci0 resource file, and there's no need for external view patches.
The fully working demo can be found here: http://hotfile.com/dl/64439791/8c333e5/pq2-dos-ni-demo-en.fixed.zip.html

I believe that because all the views that I had to reconstruct, were originally in the demo (as evident by their number and their compressed size), there should be no copyright issues with my work.

You still took them from the full game. Just adding them into the resource volume does not mask the fact that you ripped them from the full game. I would not be comfortable with supporting this. I await an original uncompressed version.

If the data (that came from a copyrighted game) is indistinguishable from data that was included in a freeware demo, is it illegal to distribute it?

Is it indistinguishable? We do not know that, as we have not yet found an uncorrupted copy of the demo. And, yes, it would still be illegal to take the views from a game that you buy and then distribute it. This is all very gray area... :\

Oh well :-)
At least it was fun, challenging and educational. Learned about sci resource formats, and even got to implement sci's variant of lzw compression.

Brandon/MusicallyInspired: Would you care to take a look at bug 3053125 I submitted about PQ3?
The bug is about adlib emulation, but I suspect the bad mix is also occurring with mt32. You have a good ear & a real mt32. Can you confirm this?
