Game Compatibility info should be expanded

Post by AlexGost »

I have a suggestion.
I think that it would be useful to add additional info in the game compatibility section. For example, in "The Secret of Monkey Island" section there should be additional information on how to rip and name audio tracks for CD version of the game, in Broken Sword 1&2 there should be information about Cutscene packs, etc.

There's already a datafiles section, and some is covered in the readme

Yeah, pretty easy
However, it would be more convenient especially for a newbie) to find all the necessary info about the game on one page.
imho

It definitely would be nice to have a more consolidated manual/set of instructions. There's a lot of bouncing around between different pages at the moment. That said, the current set up isn't exactly difficult; look at the data files page, copy/rename files, play. The Broken Sword cutscene packs aren't really an issue anymore since the playback of the original videos was enabled.

Actually I wonder why one would think that you will find answers about how to extract game data files etc. on a page which lists what games are compatible with ScummVM. Maybe you can explain that? It seems rather counter intuitive to have such information there.

I'm just suggesting that it would be convenient to see all info about the game (compatibility, extraction info, additional data files, etc) on one page. And I think that Compatibility charts look much better then wiki section.

Why would anyone want to wade through all of that extra information when all they want to see is what games are supported.

Exactly. Most people would get frustrated having a bunch of extra junk to look through. If you care enough to find the extra info, it's not that hard to look up. Even for newbies.

Actually those are good points, i.e. currently information about how to run games is scattered around different pages.

But when our visitors come to our Wiki, they see a big banner about need of volunteers to work on our manual.

So you guys are welcome to help improving that aspect of our project.

I wouldn't mind putting together a comprehensive set of game-by-game instructions. I doubt it would take all that long since all of the information is already there, and just needs to be consolidated.

I do agree with the OP that the format of the game compatibility list is nice (alphabetical lists by company), so I think it would be best to format it like that.

Maybe this information would have its place in the game pages (e.g. http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/The_S ... key_Island for SOMI). We already have an alphabetical list of the games, but it is currently split first with a list of engines and then a list of games for a specific engine (see http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Category:Games). Since we already have a category for engines (http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Category:Engines) I wonder if the game category should not directly list all games rather than splitting them by engines (a user might not know to which engines belongs a specific game he is looking for). We also have an alphabetical list of companies (http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Category:Companies) and for each one a list of games (we could formalize a bit the formating, e.g. with a 'Supported Games' section on each company page).

Alternatively, each entry in the compatibility list could link to the game's wiki entry. This way, the compatibility list stays compact and yet is an entrypoint for users to find out all they want to know about a game.
