Translate ScummVM in other languages
Moderator: ScummVM Team
Hi,
in this 1st post of mine, I'd like to inform that, since (apparently) Freeshadow and tempsanity gave up on translating ScummVM into Polish, my friends from Grajpopolsku.pl (Polish game translators community) have prepared a working, Polish version of the software. They uploaded it to the tracker a few days ago, so our request is that you update the first post in this topic and the Wiki page at http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/HOWTO ... cummVM_GUI
Thx,
cheers

I've started work on a Swedish translation. It's about 50% done. I'll aim to have it finished this weekend. If I have any questions about terminology that aren't covered by the wiki I'll ask them in this thread.
EDIT 1: Currently 84% done.
Here's a question I couldn't find the answer to in the wiki or this thread:
Do the "(built on %s)", "Features compiled in:" and "Supported engines:" strings appear anywhere else outside the "About" window? If not, should they be translated?
I'm asking because the rest of the credits in the "About" window are in English, and these strings are not available in the .pot file, as far as I can see. It might look odd if three of the strings were translated while the others weren't.
EDIT 2: 96% done. 15 fuzzy strings, 3 not translated (the ones mentioned in the question above). If there's no response to the question above by tomorrow, I'll send the current file with the remaining 3 strings not translated.
EDIT 3: 99% done. 0 fuzzy strings, 3 not translated.

Hi Sven,
thanks for your contribution! Somebody should soon look at adding it to our code base.
The translation of these three strings currently only appear in the about dialog, yes. The text also is printed in a terminal window, if one runs ScummVM from a terminal with certain options (such as "scummvm --version"). However, we don't seem to translate it there yet.
This, as well as the fact that we don't translate the rest of the about dialog, is really a missing feature (it's almost a bug, but not quite, in my opinion . If you care about this a bit, then please do not hesitate to file a feature request on our website, pointing out any places (such as the about dialog, the command line help/version texts, and others) that are not currently translatable. This won't guarantee that the issue is resolved, but at least it won't be as easily forgotten.
Thanks again for your work!

Hi sven,
Once you have finished the translation, put it on the patch tracker (as describe in my first post) and I will add it to our code base.
Concerning the translation of the about dialog, I discussed this with another translator some time ago and then forgot about it (which is where having a feature request is good ).

What about translation of kyra.dat (win1251 (text), dos866 (CREDITS.TXT))?
I translate The Legend of Kyrandia on Russian. Translation completed by 75%.
The game runs on ScummVM.
Current version: LINK REMOVED BECAUSE IT CONTAINED A FULL KYRANDIA 1 VERSION
Screenshots: Slideshow BMP PNG
But there are three problems: KYRANDIA.WSA, GEMCUT.EMC and kyra.dat.
KYRANDIA.WSA: http://animatedpng.com/ The current version has an animated KYRANDIA.PNG.
GEMCUT.EMC: The current version has GEMCUT.RMC.
kyra.dat: I don't know...

There is already a working Russian translation of Kyrandia 1-3. You should probably check them out.bckpkol wrote:What about translation of kyra.dat (win1251 (text), dos866 (CREDITS.TXT))?

About your version:
1) We won't support any animated PNG files or the like.
2) Name script files .EMC and not .RMC, we will not support changes like this.
3) You don't need to change anything in kyra.dat yourself, what you usually do is translate the strings inside the original executable and we will pick them up afterwards.
Anyway as currently there is a working fan translation I don't really see a point in adding support for a new translation. I heard the translation we support is fine language wise too.
I also removed the link to your translation, currently it is a zip containing all game data not only a patch against a normal English floppy version. That is illegal and we do not want that here. If you have a patch against a English floppy version (or any other legal version) you are free to link it here.
This version does not work well under DOSBox.LordHoto wrote:There is already a working Russian translation of Kyrandia 1-3. You should probably check them out.
What is it you think? http://files.planetcnc.ru/sg/text/SSTEditor.rar
This is a string table editor, incompatible with ScummVM.
I have to write to the same offsets.
Translations, incompatible with ScummVM:
http://katkov.net/Kyrandia/dl/kyrand1r.exe - Taras Katkov, patch only
https://www.sugarsync.com/pf/D6937683_8098138_665543 - SPK, patch only
OK, KYRANDIA.VQA.LordHoto wrote:1) We won't support any animated PNG files or the like.

I will do it.LordHoto wrote:3) You don't need to change anything in kyra.dat yourself, what you usually do is translate the strings inside the original executable and we will pick them up afterwards.
ADD: https://www.sugarsync.com/pf/D6937683_8098138_667553 - it's legal?
I do not think that all ScummVM developers have the original version of Kyrandia.

I am not sure about what the translators use, you will have to ask other translators about this.bckpkol wrote:This version does not work well under DOSBox.LordHoto wrote:There is already a working Russian translation of Kyrandia 1-3. You should probably check them out.

I am also not sure how well the Russian translation we support works under DOSBox, I just know it's based as a patch on an old English floppy version. If you patch it against a working old floppy version it should work, at least I remember someone saying it worked for him when he did that...
I think I didn't express myself clearly enough: Changes like these (even when you use a VQA movie, which *might* be the same format as Kyra3 supports, depending on the VQA version) will not be supported. If you want to translate any movies and/or graphics files you'll need to create WSA and/or CPS files. Everything else will not be supported by us, since it will require hackery for an unofficial game version.bckpkol wrote:OK, KYRANDIA.VQA.LordHoto wrote:1) We won't support any animated PNG files or the like.
Yeah that's to be expected since it doesn't know your modified version. If we will support it one day we will add the detection entries to the official source tree.bckpkol wrote:LordHoto wrote:2) Name script files .EMC and not .RMC, we will not support changes like this.User picked target 'kyra1' (gameid 'kyra1')...

Yeah there's several unused scenes in Kyra1 which might crash the game. I think 66 is one of them.bckpkol wrote: OK, GOLDEN.EMC, GOLDEN.CPS, GOLDEN.DAT, GOLDEN.MSC (Scene 66: crashes game)
PS: This is not the right topic to discuss this anyway, this is about translating the ScummVM GUI etc. and not about translating games.
criezy, hello.
I'm updated the PT-BR translation for the latest version, but got one question.
Line 1359,
"Are you sure you want to restart? (Y/N)"
Can we translate the (Y/N) too?
I mean here we use (S/N)
[(Sim/Não)]
I don't know if the keyboard shortcut will work with the translated strings.
Thanks.

You should have a comment above (if not this means you are not working with an up to date po file) that says:saulob wrote:Line 1359,

So in your case you can indeed use (S/N) but you need to also add 'S' at the end of the string (it will not be displayed but it tells ScummVM 'S' means 'Yes').#. I18N: You may specify 'Yes' symbol at the end of the line, like this:
#. "Moechten Sie wirklich neu starten? (J/N)J"
#. Will react to J as 'Yes'
