In agreement with tsoliman, Broken Sword. The first two games are great and are supported by ScummVM. Also from Revolution, Beneath a Steel Sky.

More recent releases such as Runway (not supported by ScummVM).

If I had to include a game not runable in ScummVM, I'd say Les Manley: Lost in L.A.

Tales of Monkey Island and Wallace & Gromit are really good too.

Back to the Future: The Game is good (I enjoyed it), but take note that it's a casual adventure game (the puzzles are about as easy as Telltale's first episodes of the other Telltale adventure games mentioned in this thread and stay that way through all five episodes whereas the other mentioned games get progressively more difficult (although never to the extent of the LucasArts and Sierra games) as the season goes on). The story and characters are all top notch though (and some of the puzzles are fun and creative if not all that tough).

Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People is another really good Telltale game, but the humor is not for everybody (if you haven't heard of Strong Bad (from Homestar Runner) watch some of the flash videos at the Homestar Runner website (especially the Strong Bad emails section) to see if their unique brand of humor fits your tastes before playing Telltale's game (since it does a great job of making it feel just like a playable extended Homestar Runner toon).

Nothing from Telltale is a "must play" when it comes to representing the best the adventure genre has to offer. "Pretty good" at best, maybe. And Back to the Future shouldn't be anywhere on that list.

Plundered Hearts (an obscure Infocom text pirate adventure)
Cosmology of Kyoto
Lost in Time (rather cruddy, actually, but fun)
Tales of Monkey Island
Flight of the Amazon Queen
Simon the Sorcerer 1 (haven't played the others yet)

And I want to play Gray Matter, which was designed by Jane Jenson (designer of the Gabriel Knight series)

Also, since they're technically not Sierra, AGDI's reduxes of King's Quests 2 & 3.

Oh, and Rise of the Dragon and Heart of China, though some people like to group them under Sierra...

I have to agree with you on this one, MusicallyInspired. Back to the Future was a huge disappointment to me, though it had its inspired moments. Having said that, I do hear a lot of adventure game players tell me they love it.

In my oninion, the humor in Simon is even better than that in Monkey Island. Yes, you read correctly. Simon 1&2 are really great but underappreciated titles, i have no idea why they are virtually unknown in the US. Here in germany, Simon is pretty popular at least. The music is also really nice and the backgrounds are beautiful. If you haven't checked them out yet, i recommend you do.
