I'm running an Xperia Z Ultra, running Android 4.3. I've had a read at the previous forum post regarding a black screen on opening but it's left me clueless. I don't get anything upon opening the ScummVM app and plug in from the Play Store, just a black screen. VERY occasionally I get a ScummVM loading bar, but it doesn't move, then goes black.
Can anyone help?

To reiterate, on _some_ Android devices, there seems to be a long delay with a black screen between the intial loading screen and when the themed launcher appears on screen. This is on the order of 30s. The reason is not completely known.
Also, the current version in the Google Play store is very outdated ie. v1.5.0. The current stable release is v1.6.0.
I would suggest that you install the development stable (v1.6.0git) nightly build for Android.
To do this firstly uninstall all ScummVM versions and plugin via Settings->Phone - Apps->(All) list.
Click each ScummVM and then choose "Uninstall".
Then follow the instructions here:

Note, choose the latest _STABLE_ build as the v1.7.0git development master Android build is currently broken at runtime due to the OUYA build code.
