Myst on scummvm
Hello everybody, I've a original cd-rom of the first myst and i'd like to play on my windows 8.
I've heard that there's a way to play original myst on scummvm.
Can someone tell me the way to play my original myst game on scummvm?
I've download a build version and now myst "work" but i can't save the game. Some trick to save without crashing?

Re: Myst on scummvm
It's still in development, and is probably a ways off from being fully supported, though according to the wiki it should be possible to complete (the devs would know better).Kalamaius wrote:Hello everybody, I've a original cd-rom of the first myst and i'd like to play on my windows 8.

It is missing some bits, but should be completable.
You will need a daily build where it is enabled in the Mohawk engine:

It should not "crash" when saving. That sounds like either a Windows 8 save path issue or a problem with your datafiles.
Recopy the datafiles from your original CDs and try changing the savepath location to someone else.

Kalamaius: I think Jorpho is referring to the fact that the original PC version of Myst was intended for Windows 3.1, and I have had some issues running it on Win95+.
If you want to run the original PC version of Myst using the original interpreter, the best option is get a copy of Windows 3.1 and then install this within DOSBox or FreeDOS, then install the original Myst on this. I have tested with DOSBox and this works as a solution:

As Jorpho said, you can find the Masterpiece version of Myst on GOG for 5.99 USD:
http://www.gog.com/game/myst_masterpiece_edition
As this version uses a PE executable intended for Win95+, it should run on later versions of Windows without issues.
However, as clone2727 indicated, the visual "improvements" are not epic as though the images are now 24 bit truecolor, rather than 8-bit dithered bitmap, they are the same resolution and the difference is not very striking:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myst#PC_remakes
Also, if you do use the Masterpiece Edition with the original interpreter, I suggest you disable the Help System. It tends to spoil the immersive nature of the game and is a bit too helpful at times, though this is up to you.
If you are running on a 64-bit machine, you will need to use a compatibility mode to run the original 32-bit PE executable. See here:
https://superuser.com/questions/640965/ ... ing-system
http://www.gog.com/forum/myst_series/my ... _bit/page1
It should also be noted that we have experimental support for the Masterpiece Edition along with the Original Edition in the ScummVM Mohawk engine, but they both suffer the same missing parts. This is mainly the Holoprojector in the Mechanical Age, which requires a tricky feature of arbitary QuickTime video seeking as noted on the TODO page I linked earlier.
If you play and note any issues, please check with that TODO list before bothering any of the ScummVM team with known issues. Thanks.

AFAIK, the original Myst used dithering to lower the colors to 256. The Masterpiece Edition uses the 24-bit color palette.clone2727 wrote:That's no reason to re-buy a game. (Not to mention Masterpiece Edition is not an improvement at all, really.)Jorpho wrote:You may be interested in the "Masterpiece Edition" of MYST available from GOG.com for a couple of dollars; it should run perfectly in Windows 8 (and probably look better, too).

The ME edition does look significantly better:

You wrote this as if you think I have no idea what I'm talking about. The color increase was not much of an improvement. Not to mention, the ME images are JPEG. Not worth rebuying at all.md5 wrote: AFAIK, the original Myst used dithering to lower the colors to 256. The Masterpiece Edition uses the 24-bit color palette.

If you want better quality, then get realMyst. If you have the original, buying Masterpiece Edition is throwing away money.md5 wrote:No, I wrote this because you said that there's no reason to buy the ME edition, together with screenshots that show why.
For me, the color increase makes the images look better. Overall, the improved image and sound quality are good reasons to prefer the ME edition over the regular one, IMHO.

Of course it's my opinion. I never stated what I said was fact. I truly feel that buying Myst ME when you already own the original is a waste of money. Not everyone is going to agree with that, sure. It adds nothing of value over the original. It's like buying a Blu-ray copy for those who already own the DVD: the picture might be a little better, but you've already seen and enjoyed the movie for what it is.envisaged0ne wrote:Wow. Ummm, don't you think that's up to the purchaser? It's your opinion. It sounds like you're trying to push your opinion on as fact and are getting rather defensive about it. If someone thinks the ME is worth the purchase, who are you, or anyone else, to state otherwise?
I didn't buy RealMyst initially for the reasons that clone2727 indicates here with respect to Myst ME i.e. technical improvement in visual or audio quality, but game play is the same, so fairly pointless if you have already played the game and know the story.
I did buy it in the end though when the price dropped to an impulse buy price-point and I found about the addition of the extra small age, Rime.
