Space Quest 6 - game crashes

Post by Nowhere Girl »

I realise Space Quest 6 is not supported by Scumm VM anyway, but perhaps someone will be able to help me...

I'm having a lot of bugs and such problems with Space Quest 6 and I would really love to complete this game.
Technical specifications: I use a relatively old laptop with Windows 7. I play all DOS games through D-Fend Reloaded (DOSBox with frontend, but you probably know it) and actually I really love it because of the screenshot collecting option... without it I perhaps wouldn't have bothered to play some of the games I have.
If I remember well, I didn't have any issues with the (in)famous ComPost bug, probably because speed is not really an issue when using an emulator (which is anyway quite necessary nowadays - I could still run some DOS games on Windows XP, now not anymore).
For a long time I couldn't pass the "robots" bug (which made the game crash at Stellar's funeral), which is why I don't remember for sure if I had any problems with some of the well-know bugs - I became discouraged and haven't played the game for months, yesterday I finally passed it. (The solution that worked for me is NOT exactly what is said on Sierrahelp - using the exact path of the "Robots" directory in resource.cfg file didn't help, it finally kicked into gear when I changed it to "robot = .\robots".
However, I didn't get far...
First let me return to the beginning because I encounter the same bug there. I can't run the full intro (I think). It crashes right after Roger is degraded and a small message appears:
Alert
VMD error -51 -> IMD unknown
1075
..\vmdcache.cpp(374)
I get the same message when I try to leave the space station with the spaceship, only the number after "IMD unknown" is now 1450.
I can't find any help about those bugs elsewhere.
Am I missing any files? What can I do about it?
I would really like to complete the game and now a bug stops me for good again...

Have you tried to install the game using Sierra's new SQ6 installer?:
http://sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updates/N ... ers.html#S
It has been specifically designed with DOSBox in mind.

I don't, ugh, have a CD.
I, ugh, made some changes and now I'm away to another bug. Now I no longer know which file should I use to run the game, what should I do about resource.cfg, but I can't run the game - a completely different bug appears. Perhaps you know the solution? I read that the paths in resource.cfg must match the ones in the game, but how do I do it? What is game mounting exactly? What's the difference between the game's disk path and DOSBox path or however they should be called? Its disk path is:
C:\Users\Ewa\Gry\Space Quest 6
- so what should be in resource.cfg?
I'm no computer specialist and that's why I'm unable to play with those path names, they only made me get lost.

Edit: if I run the game through sierra.exe, it says: "Error loading resource 999.pal" (a known bug, it seems).
If I run the game through sq6dos.bat, it says: "Invalid file name" or something like that (however it would sound if it was in English).

Where did you get the game?
Maybe it's an unsupported version (not that it's supported yet anyway, but still...)

You can try to run the game with switch -o

sierra.exe -o

It should work (at least that's what the wiki says for the dos version)
