Doesn't seem to have come up before, but since it just arrived on my doorstep, The Art of Point-and-Click Adventure Games is a beautiful retrospective with gorgeous pictures.
I'm sure the words are good too, but I haven't gotten that far

Beautiful book, can't recommend it enough. As the title suggests it features mostly art along with brief descriptions of the games, which are ordered chronologically, so it functions as a sort of visual history of the genre. But it's also full of interesting interviews with AG designers, some of which are not that well known, so you're likely too learn a few things you didn't know about, even if you're a hardcore fan.

Sadly, I didn't even know about it until after people started posting their unboxing of it. So I missed the limited edition pre-order.

Not that I had the money anyway.
