Getting out the best Sound?

This is really a problem for me. The most games i own (except MI1 and Zak McKracken) are using Midi-Musik (I guess). I almost read the Thread about Soundfonts and I have DL both (SGM180 & Silverspring) but I'm not sure how to use them. I only have an Asus-Laptop with Onboardsaound (AC97), but in a vew days I get (especially for this one thing) a PCMCIA-Soundblaster Audigy 2. So: how can I improve the original Gamesounds/music? Any tips or hints (or links)? I'm really thankful for any hint.
