Step back in time and visit Versailles at the court of Louis XIV

Post by criezy »

The year is 1685. The place is Versailles. Somebody has threatened to burn the castle and Alexandre Bontemps, the Premier valet of King Louis XIV, is asking for your help. You have until the end of the day to investigate and save the castle.

The ScummVM team is proud to announce support for Cryo's Versaille 1685 game and needs your help to test the game. Grab your copy of Versailles 1685 (the DOS, Windows, and Macintosh versions are supported), download the latest development build of ScummVM, and start exploring the castle and its surroundings. While you do so, please report any bugs you find on our issue tracker and take screenshots of interesting places.

I tried to test this one today, however scummvm reports it as an unknown French version... however it is English.

I have the win/dos hybrid version.

I followed the data file page and tried a few different copy methods.

In all situations however I added the cryomni3d.dat file, a DATAS_V folder w/ both cd's worth of data in it (I tried it with that folder holding all the files and all just dumping all the contents of that folder into the root folder), the VERSAILL.PGM file, the PROGRAM.Z file, and the contents of the Install\Data folder.

I tried that last folder as .\install\data, as .\data\, and as dumping the contents of the data folder into the root folder.

I don't have a guthub account, but here is the data from the clipboard.

The game in 'scummvm\' seems to be an unknown game variant.

Please report the following data to the ScummVM team at https://bugs.scummvm.org/ along with the name of the game you tried to add and its version, language, etc.:

Matched game IDs for the Cryo Omni3D engine: versailles-win-fallback

{"VERSAILL.PGM", 0, "1c992f034f43418a5da2e8ebd0b92620", 710467},

and then there is this one as well:

The game in 'scummvm\' seems to be an unknown game variant.

Please report the following data to the ScummVM team at https://bugs.scummvm.org/ along with the name of the game you tried to add and its version, language, etc.:

Matched game IDs for the Cryo Omni3D engine: versailles-win-fr

{"PROGRAM.Z", 0, "f5327cb860a67a24a52b6125ddc5e00b", 256146},

Strange it detects it as French.

If I add the game anyway and try to start it, scummvm just closes instantly. The second one won't even let me add it anyways.

Different versions of the game use files with different names, so we need a bit more information to add detection for unrecognized version:
  • How are the font named in the DATAS_V/FONTS directory? Are they named font01.crf, font02.crf, font03.crf and so on, or do they have proper font names such as arial11.crf, helvet11.crf, helvet12.crf?
  • How are the sounds file named under DATAS_V/DIAL/VOIX? Some versions pad the file names with underscores (so they they all are 8 characters long) and others don't (for example ALI001__.WAV vs ALI001.WAV)

Report Source: Versalles - Complot en la Corte del Rey Sol Original Spanish CDs.

The Windows exe and dos versions of the game are successfully detected by ScummVM, but doesn't detect the compressed windows version, Because in the engine's detection file has an invalid file length.

Game: Versailles 1685, Spanish Windows 95 compressed from hybrid Win95/DOS CD
File: PROGRAM.Z
WRONG File Size: 346112. The Real file size is 237800 bytes.
The hash value of the file is same as in the detection file

This Bad file size belongs to the exe file in this previous detection line. Maybe a Copy/Paste error?

@scoriae: Thank you. Detection for this version has now been added.

@GoodOldGeord: Than you for the report as well. I am waiting for confirmation from the developer who added that detection that this is indeed an error and not a new version that should be added. But the size being the exact same one as for the non-compressed Windows version is certainly suspicious.
Edit: The Spanish compressed Windows 95 detection entry has now been corrected. This was indeed a copy/paste error.

Hi!
I have registered to tell that I am a big fan of 'Versailles 1685' - I have written a guide for it (in Russian) and I have collected many, many versions of this game :)

Sadly, neither of them is recognized by the latest daily build of ScummVM.
Could you please add them?
I used to report many such bugs at SourceForge, but now it seems to be moved to some weird place called Git-Hub or something, I am not registered there.

I do not know why it lists only one or two files - the others should be different as well? Or only those two files are being checked?
And what version does it support then? :)

Hello,

Thank you for your report.
To have your versions detected, you need to have the Versailles executable binary.
You can follow instructions here: https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php?titl ... illes_1685

Your reports miss the Versailles executable and we can't add them.
The two files included in the report let us determine which variant of the game it is.

Anyway, you seem to have languages that are currently unsupported (Russian, Brazilian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean).
These ones will need additional work as data is bundled in the executable and the extraction process is far from obvious.

What do you mean by pirate version?

Hi lephilousophe,

Thanks for the clarification, but how do you need to have the Versailles executable binaries - you want me to send you those files or just the codes ScummVM reports when trying to add the games?

Here are those codes:

1. French DVD version.

Code: Select all

  {"PROGRAM.Z", 0, "167ac4d6e60856ee84d7369107d858d4", 230056},
2. Russian pirate CD version 1 (DOS).
Well, after copying the texts and the PGM executable, the game now adds and runs fine (recognized as 'English')!
Only some messages are in English instead of Russian: the menu, the descriptions of items etc., while the dialogues and the texts in the encyclopedia are in Russian.
What files do you need to make it all appear in Russian, if it is possible at all?

3. Russian pirate CD version 2 (Windows).

Code: Select all

  {"PROGRAM.Z", 0, "08035f9d2db8f8b1eba17284b73238e2", 255188},
  {"FONT01.CRF", 0, "409a3ac3ab37137d2cd87371ff0ecd13", 22522},
4. Brazilian DVD version.

11. French CD version (Windows) and 12. French CD version (Macintosh).
After copying the texts and the executables, the games now add and run fine, thanks!
The only complain I have is about the speed: with Omni3D set to 'Normal' everything is very slow for me, and on 'Rapide' it is too fast. Is there any way to regulate the rotation speed more precisely in ScummVM?

By 'pirate versions' I mean, well, illegal, bootleg, unlicensed editions :)
In difference from most other games by Cryo, 'Versailles 1685' has never been officially published in Russia, Ukraine and other post-Soviet countries, - we only had two pirated editions.

Thanks for your report, I just added the detection entries for French, English, Italian and German to the Git.
They should work without additional work but if you could test it that would be great.
There is one little thing to check for the German version: is there a RAVENSBG.HLZ file?
If not, I think I will have to do a little patch to make it work properly.

For the Russian versions, it seems we can't add them in the project because they have been provided illegally (with the full game contents and not with a patch).

For the other languages, I can't accept your binaries as it would be piracy.
I have python scripts that work with Ida Pro to dump the needed strings but that would imply you are able to use Ida Pro.
I suppose I could rewrite them for Ghidra (which is freely available) but it depends on if you are willing to help me extract all of this.
In addition, you would have to extract the executable from its compressed form. I have a python script for this or there are various windows binaries around the net to do this (i3comp.exe for example)
In any case, I won't be able to have this in shape for the release due for this week-end.

Of course, I will test it - but a little bit later. Currently there are only yesterday's builds available for download at buildbot.scummvm.org, and they do not recognize the DVD version yet.
I hope your corrections will be added there tomorrow?
I will be out of town until Sunday though.

I do not see such a file in German DATAS_V folder. Where should it be?

That's very sad to hear, but why???
I do not think that ScummVM policy prohibits supporting old pirated versions.
"Versailles 1685" is certainly an abandonware title, as you can't buy it on GOG or anywhere else on the primary market. And ScummVM does support some pirate versions, like the recently added Russian edition of 'Książę i Tchórz'.
Besides, GOG itself now sells quite a number of those Russian bootleg editions, so they could be considered legal.

I am certainly willing to help, but I am not a programmer and I have no idea what are all those things are :)
So you will have to give me precise tools to extract anything (if you do not want me to send you the EXE files - I do not think that could be considered as piracy without all the other files).

To protect the ScummVM project we have to be strict on this and not be seen as supporting piracy. This is not an imaginary threat, and we have received in the past a cease and desist letter from a game company who misunderstood what the project was about. There is some information on our policy on the Copyright FAQ page on our wiki.

We do support fan translation of games. Where we draw the line is related to how those are distributed. A fan translation distributed as a patch to be applied on a commercial version of the game is perfectly fine. A fan translation distributed as the full game is not.

Thank you for making Versailles run under scummvm.

I was able to finish the first act without any problems.
The game animations of people talking work better than under a windows 95 vm.
In the vm they were played too fast.

I did have some problems regarding the installed files. First I couldn't find which game files I needed.
Luckily there was a link in this forum thread: https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php?titl ... illes_1685
Secondly the directory structure wasn't clear to me. It would find the game but complained about not finding OBJETS/VS1.HLZ
All the file names in my directory are lowercased.

After copying around some files, this is the structure I ended up with that works:
1) Make a directory called versailles
2) copy to this directory all files mentioned in: https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php?titl ... illes_1685
3) Make sure you copied the files and directories from inside the directories mentioned, not the directories itself.
e.g. not the datas_v directory itself, but everything inside that directory, animacti, fonts, img_fix, etc.

To know the files needed, the Wiki is the official source of information.
I tried to improve the wiki page to make it clearer that DATAS_V directories shouldn't be included.
Could you tell me if it's more understandable now? Thanks.
