Game breaking bug in KQ1 SCI

Post by AgustinCordes »

Hi all,

This is such a nasty bug that I'm wondering whether there's something wrong with my copy or I'm missing something myself. When you meet the leprechauns, you can either rely on the four-leaf clover to avoid them or play a violin to make them dance and get some extra points.

When I play the violin, the game hangs. The leprechauns disappear, but Graham will keep playing the violin indefinitely.

Has this ever happened to any of you? I'm carrying the clover and the violin. Thanks!

I can see that there's a bug ticket on our tracker about possibly a similar issue, albeit for the KQ1 demo.

Perhaps the cause is the same; some animation speed / timing issue.

What version of ScummVM are you using and on what platform?

I'm testing this with 2.1.2 on iPad and 2.2.0 (git) on macOS Catalina.

Didn't occur to me that it could be a timing issue, but I've just set the animation to normal speed and same result.

Same issue on Windows, 2.1.2 with default settings. I'll attach the save in case anyone wants to give it a try. Just opening the door and typing "play fiddle" will crash the game.

OK... this is extremely weird. I tested again from an earlier save and acquired some missing points (exiting the dragon's cave from the inside). Went back to the leprechauns, played the violin, and... voilá. The sequence worked. Only major difference was that I had 135 points instead of 133.

I'm baffled. Looks like I stumbled upon an ancient and pretty nasty bug from Sierra that had nothing to do with ScummVM.

I think it might be a good idea to create a ticket on https://bugs.scummvm.org with both the save game that shows the issue and one that worked. We have fixed many original script bugs already in ScummVM and our SCI team may be interested in looking at that one as well.
