Can't wait
I just downloaded the ResidualVM build svn package for Ubuntu and added the path to my Grim Fandango files and it started right up. I get weird color distortion when I switch between fullscreen and windowed but everything else seems to work quite well (except for loading savegames created with ResidualVM). I hope this will turn into successful a project as ScummVM has been for the last years. I really love the idea of preserving these great games through re-interpretation of the underlying software. I would love to see upcoming generations enjoy Grim Fandango as much as I did.
Great job so far, hope you will get lots more support.

You mean, switching from within the game itself? Seems to be a 'normal' thing in Linux and in-game option selection isn't exactly working properly anyway. I'd suggest (if you haven't yet) that you edit .residualrc so that it has fullscreen=TRUE and make sure that soft_renderer=FALSE in case it doesn't.r1ncewind wrote:I get weird color distortion when I switch between fullscreen and windowed
Yes, it's great news that the project is back on track. I created a news post about it on the front page of http://www.grim-fandango.com, which hopefully will help you get more support

Yeah, once the game is running I hit Alt+Enter and after it has resized it gets all rainbow-y. When I start in Fullscreen that's no problem. Also, I get flickering menus and stuff like that but since we're not supposed to complain about bugs just yet I'd rather keep waiting for something improved before making more fuss about a program that can't work properly at this point in time.MeddlingMonk wrote:You mean, switching from within the game itself? I've heard of some systems pack colours differently in windowed and fullscreen mode. E.g. in one they may use five bits for each of the red, green and blue component, and in the other they may use six bits for one of them and five for the other two. That could cause strange colours when changing between the two modes, though I've never had the chance to witness it myself. (When I've heard about it, it's been on Macs.)
I know ScummVM deals with that situation, or at least it provides a mechanism to do so, but does ResidualVM?

If it doesn't, it probably will. It's so alpha in a way it's not worth "worrying" about. I mean, remember ScummVM when it was early days? It could only run the early Scumm games somewhat well and the later ones like Full Throttle and CMI would make it implode. It'll get there and I'm taking ResidualVM's spin-off as a good sign about the intent to make it all work in the end.eriktorbjorn wrote:I know ScummVM deals with that situation, or at least it provides a mechanism to do so, but does ResidualVM?

First the Pandora guys need to get their act together and finally release a device. There is absolutely no sense in developing for a platform that hasn't even arrived on the market yet. I'm probably just as excited about the idea as the next guy but so far I'm actually quite skeptical. Once the "SHIP THEM!" item on their TODO list has been checked and there are some sound reviews for it and the kinks have been worked out maybe then someone will want to code for it.Ubi wrote:You should hook up with Open Pandora guys. Having availability of Monkey Island 4 & Grim Fandango on Pandora would be worth it.

basicly, residual follows the innner workings of the game but adjusted with porting the code for modern systems. the emulator on the other hand immitates the system and runs the game as part of the immitation of the original system.
an outcome is in both cases that you can play the game etc. on the systems never designed for. the code for residual is tailor-made to run the engine, and not the whole system it worked once.
don't know how it explain it better. HELP!
