Escape from Monky Island support?

Post by theratt »

I was just wondering if anybody was even working on EMI? as far as I know, it is very close to Grim, so it shouldn't be that hard to bring in initial support.

Thanks,

New audio compression and animation system and container files I think, I'm not a programmer so I'm not sure. I don't think there has been any work on it up to now, all the work on residual is getting Grim Fandango completable at the moment.

Welcome to the residual project forum, theratt :)

Quite recently, to the joy and happiness of all adventure gamers across the globe, the firsh chapter of the Tales of Monkey Island has been released (after 7 years, at last!!!) :D

And as a result, Monkey Island is in the spotlights again, and there is more awaking interest from the public. It's only natural to ask about the progress of EMI in ResidualVM, and it's quite pleasing to see there is interest in the project. I will try to sum up the things I know, and I most sincerely hope it will help.

The ResidualVM project, as you may know, was initially exclussively crafted for Grim Fandango. But naturally, it quickly started leaning towards the aim of supporting the GrimE engine in general, and that means supporting Escape from Monkey Island (EMI) one day. The project was thus becoming even more faithful to the goal given with its name, as EMI was an additional game from the remaining games (sequals or company adventure games not featured in scummvm, because of their extra dimension) - the residual games.

Technically, the engine is quite altered. monkey4 uses functions that grim fandango doesn't use at all, or are rarely used - and there is quite a different approach in coding, but one musn't dismiss the similarities. Both of these keyboard-driven 2.5D adventures use the same LUA programming language version (3.1-alpha) and both games are in many ways technically similar.

Some formal arrangements were made, but the game was mostly looked at as one yet to be handled in the future. But nevertheless, the work done on the game wasn't only of a symbolical nature but also some preliminary preparations were made (opcodes, some initial adaptations etc.).

The link in Ezekiel000's post shows ResidualVM's priorities, and as we can see, supporting monkey4 isn't currently a priority. Unfortunately much is still to be done with Grim Fandango, and EMI should be implemented on a safe and stable GrimE engine put forth by a perfectly working Grim Fandango, and only then the real adaptation could be truly done. Otherwise it would be a real mess.

There were two guys, jvaltane and rkekki, making a patch to support EMI (see this log, 21:03) using the current alpha state of the engine, but of course they were told that the current focus is sorting out grim fandango and only when that's accomplished can there be more extensive work done on EMI.

I want to point out again, that if there is more support coming for the current focus (the developement of gf), gf could be finished quicker, and the team can start working on EMI earlier. So every bit of help is more than welcome in any form.

Cheers :)

Nobody is working on EMI from what I know.
EMI is not compatible to Grim, there are lot of differences. To prevent create more mess and hack into code we first finish support Grim.

Thank you for the replies. I have been following ScummVM for years and have gone through the first 3 monkey islands MANY Times. I Have never finished EMI though I own it for PC and PS2 (I get to monkey Kombat and loose intrest), and only found out about this project when you broke away from ScummVM a few months back. I love where this project is going and loook forward to the continued development... and to one day play EMI on my wii like I just played the first 3 Monkey games (and ToMI if it ever comes out for Wii) :)

Thanks again,
