Grim crashing... how to patch game on Mac OSX?

Post by brettalandavis »

I just downloaded this incredible program and began enjoying Grim Fandango for the first time in many years. Then the trouble came.

My game is crashing after the initial traveling into the land of living. It crashes whenever I try to enter Manny's office with the chemical-filled balloons. I stand on the threshold of the door and it's fine, but the moment I try to enter that officeÔÇöCRASH.

Is this an issue that patching the game would fix? I ask because I do not have subtitles during the cutscenes (and somewhere I read that those are an evidence of a patched game).

How does one go about patching the game in Mac OSX? The obvious answers include things like Parallels, but I'm not going to spend the money to buy that. Has anyone found a creative, out-of-the-box solution?

If this wouldn't be solved by patching the game, does anyone have any other thoughts?

Thank you all for your help!

Which version of residual? (Ref and date)

The patch can be extracted with a tool in our repos, but that tool requires compiling.

Parallells can also be substituted with VirtualBox, which is free.

No, this shouldn't be related with the patch. I couldn't reproduce it, can you provide a save?

Anyway to install the patch you must compile patchex from https://github.com/residualvm/residualvm-tools that unpacks the patch. Then copy the files grim.tab, data005.lab and patch05.bin in your grim directory.

Next time I encounter a glitch, I'll definitely post it there.

Just for clarification, when you say the crash is fixed, what do you mean? How do I "fix it" on my system?

Either compiling the last git version or waiting for an automatic rebuild to download.
Btw, i saw that your savegame isn't compatible with the last version, so you won't be able to use it. You can anyway jump to the right point in the game like explained at http://forums.residualvm.org/viewtopic.php?t=73

LOL! I honestly don't know how to go about compiling the last git version, so I suppose I'll need to wait for the automatic rebuild (I assume that's the DMG file available on the main download page). Any guesses on when that will be available?

Thanks for all your incredible help, Giucam!
