Grim Menu Access

I'm on a Mac OS X 10.7.5

I searched through the forums and found similar issues, but nothing exact. I see that to access the in-game Grim menu I need to hit F1; is this not the function (fn) key plus 1? I've enabled the function keys in the system preferences... what am I missing? All that happens is Manny pulls out his scythe as if I wasn't hitting the fn key at all.
