Grim Fandango: Game Crashes After Intro Cutscene (Macbook)

Post by Conzo »

Hey everyone,

Firstly, apologies in advance for initiating this thread when the solution to my problems is likely already posted somewhere on this forum. In my defense I did have a scan of previous threads but could find no answers.

I recently installed version 0.1.1 of ResidualVM on my MacBook, an older model operating with OS 10.5.8. As instructed, I created a folder containing all necessary Grim Fandango files (those ending in extension .LAB; GRIM.TAB; and gfupd101.exe.) I directed ResidualVM to this folder on my Desktop and it seemed to identify it without an issue. It was added to the ResidualVM directory as Grim Fandango (Windows/English), and I eagerly clicked Start so that I could reunite with Manny and co.

Unfortunately, soon after I encountered a recurring problem that I've yet to rectify. Grim Fandango begins as normal, with the intro cutscene. However, when it comes time for the transition from cutscene to gameplay, the game/program ALWAYS freezes. This freeze affects not just ResidualVM, but my entire computer. I cannot start any other applications. I of course cannot close ResidualVM. Everything is frozen.

As I said, this happens at the same point every time - when the game should transition from the end of the intro cutscene to the commencement of gameplay. I don't know if there's an issue with the files I copied or if I'm missing something, but any insight would be greatly appreciated.

(FYI - for whatever it's worth I tried downloading and then running both the Intel and Power PC disk images of ResidualVM 0.1.1, with both ultimately having this same result.)

Does this also happen if you run in software rendering mode? (Click edit game, it's under graphics -> software rendering).

My first suspicion would be broken graphics drivers.

I was having the same problem as Conzo on my macbook, simply changing the graphics setting to software rending solved this problem.

If you are in the same boat try this first!
