Myst III not able to add game

Post by Klizine »

Hello all...first post. I've searched the heck out of the internets but couldn't find anything. I have regular English Myst 3 ( 4 cd one) and I have copied all the files, merging the data folder files so everything looks as the examples. I applied the patch, however when I go to Add the game in Residual it states no game can be found. I had no issues adding grim. Does anyone have any ideas? This doesn't work in version 0.2 nor the latest nightly build. Thank you in advance.

I assume when you say examples you are referring to the readme on installing the games.
https://github.com/residualvm/residualv ... g-myst-iii

I would say check again to make sure the files are placed in the correct location, that all the files are there, and that you are running the game from the executable.

Hi, all.

Having just discovered ResidualVM, I pulled out my original Myst3 4-CD set and copied the data precisely as described at this address:

http://wiki.residualvm.org/index.php?title=Datafiles

I then ran the patch to which the ResidualVM site links and positioned the new executable over the old and also the other files as mentioned in the link above an in the help file.

At first, I used the zipped executable for ResidualVM, but, as with the original post in this thread, ResidualVM could not find the game. I then tried the windows installable version of ResidualVM, but with the same [non]result.

Details
-------

Operating System: Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit
Game Folder: c:\Games\myst3\
Patch: English v1.22 as linked on ResidualVMs site
ResidualVM version: 0.2.1

In addition to pointing ResidualVM to the c:\Games\myst3\, I attempted to point to the three subfolders (bin, Data, and M3Data), just to be thorough. Still, no joy. However, on pointing to the M3Data folder, there was a text response in the console window which read:
The game in 'C:\Games\myst3\M3Data\' seems to be unknown.
Please, report the following data to the Residual VM team along with name
of the game you tried to add and its version/language/etc.:
{"RSRC.m3r", 0, "a2c8ed69800f60bf5667e5c76a88e481", 1223862}
This may or may not have any bearing on the problem.

I'd love to get this working, but I need some suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks for whatever help you may provide.

Hi exiledengineer,

This error message means ResidualVM can't find your M3.exe file. Make sure it is in your c:\Games\myst3\bin\ folder.

Please note that you only need to use one patch, and that you must use the patch matching your game CDs language.

Thank you for the response, bgK.

There is no doubt that the M3.exe is located in the bin folder. I have also used only the English patch as the CD pack and the included user manual are all written in English.

Still no luck.

Any other suggestions are certainly welcome.

Looks like you did everything correctly. M3.exe and RSRC.m3r are the only two files ResidualVM checks when detecting Myst III.
It seems ResidualVM is having trouble seeing both at the same time.
Can you please move M3.exe and RSRC.m3r in the c:\Games\myst3\ folder? (ResidualVM actually does not care where the files are in the folder hierarchy.)
If that is unsuccessful, can you please post here the md5sum for your M3.exe?

Hi, bgK.

Thank you for the suggestion. Moving the M3.exe and RSRC.m3r to the c:\Games\myst3\ folder made it possible for ResidualVM to recognize the presence of Myst3 game.

There was just one more problem which became evident after this point. In addition to the "DOS" console window that runs with the GUI, the GUI itself has a special debugger console window, as I imagine you know. On my first start attempt after ResidualVM recognized the game, this debug console appeared with the following message:
ERROR: Unable to open archive ENGLISH.m3t!
Recognizing this as one of the files that the patch had updated, I copied it from the ...\M3Data\TEXT\ folder, where I had moved it after patching, to the c:\Games\myst3\ folder. My attempt to run the game following this change was successful!

I'm not certain, but my patching procedure might be where I erred in the first place. I noticed in running the patch that the folder created had both a ...\bin\ and an ...\M3Data folder, just as does the base game. These were in a folder generated by the patch called \defaultValues\ or some such thing, and I supposed that I had run the patch from the incorrect location, else the patch files should have ended up in the game's own ...\bin\ and ...\M3Data folders. So it seemed sensible to me to copy the new patch files from the patch folder into the game's respective folders. This certainly put the new M3.exe file into the location required by the ResidualVM instructions, but perhaps I overthought this and should have left things as they were following the patch.

I welcome any explanation you might offer so that I shall be the wiser next time.

In any case, thanks very much for getting me onto the right track.

Very finest regards,

I'm glad you've been able to fix your issues. However I don't really have an explanation regarding what happened. I suppose Windows VirtualStore may have been triggered when installing the patch, resulting in the new files not actually being in the same folder.

Just extra information for anyone installing Myst III -

I had initial problems with ResidualVM not picking up the Myst III folder. The folder tree was as pictured, except I couldn't find the RSRC.m3r file. It wasn't on any of the MystIII discs.

The M3Data folder on the first disc (which contains the RSRC.m3r file and lots of others) is hidden. On Windows, copying all the discs into one folder (merging the respective subfolders) doesn't work because hidden files/folders are ignored.

Once I turned on "show hidden", I was then able to copy the M3Data folder off the first disc, install the 1.22 patch, and everything was up and running.

Hello,

I run ResidualVM 0.3.0 (built of June, 3rd 2017) on a Raspberry Pi3 thanks to RetroPie.
I have the same issue when I try to add Myst III Exile as a new game via the GUI:

Code: Select all

ScummVM could not find any game in the specified directory!
I try several combinations:
- copy the required files from the DVD (according to http://wiki.residualvm.org/index.php/Datafiles). For info I'm using the French version.
- then copy both M3.exe and RSRC.m3r to the game root directory ./Myst III Exile/
- replace M3.exe by the patched M3.exe founded on http://wiki.residualvm.org/index.php/Myst_3
- restart from scratch and copy the required files after installing the game on Windows (still with French version)
- replace M3.exe by the French patched M3.exe founded on http://wiki.residualvm.org/index.php/Myst_3
- replace M3.exe by the English patched M3.exe after extracting it with InnoExtract

I had the same error message from ResidualVM.
I may miss something but need some help to go in the right way.
Could you help?

Can you post a list of you have somewhere? (The output of the tree command for example)

Also please check ResidualVM was built with Myst III support enabled (Check in the about screen).

Please find the content of the directory on the pastebin type site http://paste.ubuntu.com/24787122/

I've checked the About screen and it says Grim, Myst III and Stark engines are available.

You need to rename the file "language.m3u" in the "TEXT" folder to the appropriate explicit language.
If you copied it from the "FRENCH" folder on the DVD, then it should be renamed to "FRENCH.M3U".

If you copied it from the sizegenetics website "FRENCH" folder on the DVD, then it should be renamed to "FRENCH.M3U".
Yes! Thanks bgK, that finally got it to work.
