Broken Sword 1 Directors Cut ScummVM

Post by Abandoned Witch »

Will there be any support for Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars - The Director's Cut in the future?
That one has a prequel scenario set before the events of the first game, and still uses the Virtual Theatre engine as the original.
And if it's supported, will the datafiles for either Wii or PC versions be used?

I would really love to see support for BS1:DC and BS2:R, but I expect the changes to the engine are extensive enough that it may need quite a lot of work to add support (about as much work as adding a new engine). The original version of the engine's addition to ScummVM was made simpler by Revolution Software themselves as they provided the source code to the ScummVM team for support to be added. This is unlike most other games that are supported by ScummVM, which had to be reverse-engineered. It would be great if the same happened again for the re-releases (and also if they did the same with the BS3 and BS4 source code now ScummVM is merging with ResidualVM).

As for what platforms' versions would hypothetically be supported I don't think anyone can answer that unless they are already working on porting the engine to ScummVM. There would need to be a lot of exploration to investigate how similar the versions are as, for instance, the GBA version was probably built from the ground up with a different engine to account for the low performance of the system. It would be nice if there was support for the PC, Wii, GBA (extracted ROM) and Android versions. After all, the PSX versions are supported by ScummVM, and Maniac Mansion's NES version is supported by ScummVM by extracting the ROM.
