residualVM: support for Myst III / MKI4?

Post by grizebard »

Thanks to residualVM I have been revisiting Grim Fandango with much pleasure - muchas gracias, maestros/as! - but can't seem to add Myst III: Exile or Escape from Monkey Island.

Things don't add up. I'm using residualVM v0.3.1 (built 25.Sep.2020) with Linux Mint v19.1, and the v.0.3.1 compatibility web page indicates that MystIII is supported but makes no mention of MKI4, which is apparently confirmed by the "about" option, which lists credits for "Myst 3" but not MKI4. Contrariwise, however, the command line option "-z" reports "grim" and "monkey4" but not Myst. Hmmm(?)

The bottom line though is the debug output produced when trying to add either: the detection process apparently only looks for 7 language versions of "grim", 6 language versions of "grim (Demo)", and nothing else. Which might rather explain my total lack of success! There's no reporting of an unknown version of either encountered, for example, (but should there be?) and (of course) no consequent checking of files either.

Is it then simply that the various info for v.0.3.1 is somewhat awry, or is it something else entirely...?

(Oh, and BTW, the little pop-up message window that indicates "no game found" displays "scummVM", not "residualVM". I saw someone else mention this on here somewhere.)

ResidualVM v0.3.1 does not support Escape from Monkey Island but does Myst 3 and this line up with what you found.
I tested debian 10 package and I see Myst 3 is detected without a problem. It's also visible on the list with -z.
Possible it's a question to Mint package maintainer if it's properly packaged (as Mint is Debian based).

About scummvm typo, it was sync code bug, but now it will not happen any more :)

Many thanks for your response. It seems very credible that MystIII should be there and MKI4 not, even if that does leave an outstanding anomaly that -z says the very opposite!

:> residualvm -z
Game ID Full Title
-------------------- ------------------------------------------------------
grim Grim Fandango
monkey4 Escape From Monkey Island

I wanted to install the stable release of 0.3.1, but for some odd reason, for that particular version there isn't an installer for either Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (my preference, obviously) or Debian, let alone Mint, so I downloaded the source as a zip file and built that as per instructions on Git. Which in the event was perfectly fine for GF. Played right to the end.

When I try to add MystIII to my shiny new residualVM, though, should I not expect to see an indication of searches for it in the debug output just as I can see for GF? And if it did find something silently, why then no "unknown version" output for the relevant file(s)? Is that not the expected response? (What files should it be looking for anyway?) More likely from the above output, it isn't looking for Myst at all (or MKI4 besides). Hmmm.

Given what you say about the newer Deb10 unstable build version, though, maybe I now need to try that. Or should that be Deb9 instead for Mint 19.1?

(And how then do I best remove the existing version first? Should I delete it manually from /usr/local/bin, where it seems to have been planted, or would I be better to use the "uninstall" option in the menu? I've never done a build of someone else's source code before.)
