Android version 2.2.1d crashes upon start
Hi everyone. After updating my phone (Google Pixel 3 XL) to Android 11 Scummvm keeps crashing upon start up. Sometimes I barely get to glimpse the game inventory, other times I have a few seconds before the app just shuts down without any failure code/explanation or crash report.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times to no avail.
Is this a known issue?
Thsnk you in advance

Okay, for some reason, if I take a screenshot at the exact moment the app opens, it doesn't crash. I've grabbed a few pics. But the app is still pretty useless

This is not a known issue. However, please clarify:
- Are you using the Android version from the Play Store?
- Does the crash occur in the ScummVm launcher or while running a game?
- The error suggests that you may be missing a data file (99.LFL) for the game. Did you check that it's there in your game folder?

I'm using the version downloaded from Google Play. I haven't been able to launch a game, only add one. The crash occurs in the launcher. Sometimes before it even begins

The "missing file charset" message is really confusing me, then.
We are aware of certain changes that Google has introduced to Android 11 (increased file and folder access security measures) which may be causing the issues for you.
You could try installing one of the daily developer builds (version 2.3.0git) where we implemented a few possible fixes for this situation (although more will be probably coming in the future based on feedback).

Thank you, I tried. First I was met with the question "do you wish to install an update to this existing app? You won't lose your existing data" followed by "the app wasn't installed". So no luck

Re: Android version 2.2.1d crashes upon start
Please try with the arm64-v8a apk (which I'm guessing is the appropriate one for Google Pixel 3 XL, since it features a 64bit ARM CPU).
However, it could be also that you would need to set on your phone settings to allow installation for third party apps / unsigned apps.
If that does not work, then I can only recommend patience until we upload the next stable version on the Play Store and we are able to test on Android 11 devices more.

Thank you, I tried - same result. I shall attempt to find my patience.

Have you tried uninstalling the Play Store version and then the daily build? If I remember right, installing a non-store version over a store version (or the other way round) never worked for me.
As a side note, on my Pixel 5 with Android 11 and latest patches, latest ScummVM (non-beta, like shown in your screen shot above) seems to run fine.
OK, I always have to search for the "F5" key in the on-screen keyboard to make the menu appear (as there is no long-press on the back gesture available), but that is a minor inconvenience only.

No. Where do I find "the daily build"?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: Android version 2.2.1d crashes upon start
I was referring to the same build you have been trying to install (see your screen shots in the posts above). The link to that build is in one of the posts up there, but you already have that build as it seems.
Key thing is: Don't try to install this over an exsisting installation, but: uninstall ScummVM from your Pixel 3XL before installing that development build.
The files (like save games, games) stored somewhere on your "internal SD card" should be no issue and should remain intact during this procedure.

Looking at ScummVM again, I tried the key mapping feature and now the menu also appears with an easy reachable key on the virtual keyboard. No more searching for F5 and much more convenient now.

Eureka! And they launch, too
